What amusements parks did you go to when you were a kid? The was a small playland acroos the street from where I grew up, but that doesn't count. In the 1950's my family almost always went to Coney Island.
When Freedomland opened, we went there quite often. After it closed, we went to Palisades Park. Only went to Rye once.

We never went anywhere in NY. We used to vacation on the Jersey Shore, a small town called Lavalette, so we always went to Seaside Heights which was only a two towns away.
I remember sitting on the beach at night looking down the shoreline at the lights on the ferris wheel and the roller coaster that seemed to stretch out into the ocean.

I didn't go to Rye beach until I went on a school trip, and as I got older we went with our friends. Same with Coney Island. I went once or twice in the 70's.
My Aunt worked at Freedomland, and took me when I was a baby, but I don't remember it at all.

Palisades amusement park was without a doubt my favorite. Rye Playland was a close second. Both were close to The Bronx

Coney Island, without a doubt...boy oh boy, was that a loooong train ride on the "D" train from Yankee Stadium! Went to Palisades a few times...wasn't that some view going up the roller coaster and seeing nothing but WATER as you're going up!!!! Eeker

Went to Rye Playland on a school trip once also. Never went to Freedomland.

Rye Playland and Palisades Park were the two I remember. Also went to Freedomland when it first opened. There was the small neighborhood rides behind Carvel on E. 189th Street...I used to take my little brothers there in the summer for a little recreation and some delicious Carvel.

Dianne, I lived diagonally across the street from that Carvel in the apartment building next to the vacant lot.

My father had a shoe store in Coney Island from about 1948 - 1964 so I spent a lot of time there (and on the subway) working for him and taking off at lunch to hit the boardwalk and go to Steeple Chase when it was opened. Also used to take the bus across the GW to go to Palisades Amusement Park on weekends. Did the Freedomland thing a couple of times as well. My aunt and uncle lived in Lakewood, NJ so when I visited them we used to go to Asbury Park.

I knew the Moranos. They lived on the second floor of my building. Patty was my favorite.

Margie Shepard who used to post here, would probaby remember this, it wasn't an amusement park, but it was a regular park with swings, etc. called "Scratch Park"...it was on 161st St. and Morris Ave., I think. I don't know how it got called that, there wasn't a plaque or anything by the park.

Anyone remember this?

Since my parents did not have a car, we exclusively went to Coney Island. My dad had a friend who had a car and he would take us on rides on the Westside Highway where we could see Palisades Amusement Park, but never crossed the bridge.
