I don't believe in any of this garbage. The only think I worry about is making it from day to day.It does no one any good to worry about something that if it's going to happen there isn't anything anybody can do to prevent it, so why worry.

Any Catholic out there that remember the "letter from the Lady of Fatima" that the pope
opened in 1960? For years as a grade schooler I fear New Years 1960. The nuns told us
they had on good authority the letter contained when the world would end. I think that
qualifies the Church as a cult.

Ya know Gibby, I started reading this and I was smiling, as I too, remembered the 'letter'.....then I read the last line, and now I am very disappointed in you....the church is a cult? You're a very ignorant person.

There are certain things about the Catholic Church that makes people scratch their heads. Yes the letter of Fatima was the center piece of the church for many years and strangely it was suddenly meaningless.

I grew up as a catholic and one thing that always made me wonder was: Why they would not let the people read the bible. I don't remember my relatives reading from the bible in church!
Things may have changed now but I wouldn't know I left the religion a long time ago after certain things no one could explain to me. Then I found my answers in the Bible it self.

Let me ask you IG didn't they tell us how lucky we were to be given the gift of faith?
I don't remember any one giving me that. They tried to brain wash us. No one ever told
me it was ok if I didn't want to believe them. In fact they said I would burn in hell
for all eternity. Also told us to go out and convert all non Catholics. Church does a
lot of good things but it's not for everyone.

I don't know what church you attended Gibby, but I went to Mt Carmel Church on 187th street in the Bronx, we were never told to convert anyone. First of all the Mass was in Latin, then when the priest came to the podium, I remember him telling stories of Saints, and asking for money for this and that. I don't remember fire and brimstone, I was never scared by my Church, and I was never brainwashed. Yes we were given the gift of faith by the Holy Spirit when we are baptized, then when we make our First Holy Communion. Why knock the Catholic church? It's not perfect, but it comes close, there are priests and nuns who really try, but they are human beings. Look at me, I try, but I am only a human being too, and God takes that into consideration, believe me He knows what mistakes he made, and yes, maybe He can make a mistake, but not twice.

IG, I attended St. Martin of Tours on Grote St. Father Blake, the pastor, always preached fire & brimstone and burning in hell.
We kids used to pray that he wasn't serving 9:00 Mass.

Gibby,
I too was baptized a Catholic at birth and Like IGrapes I attended Mt Carmel Church. I don't quite remember it the way Grapes does but it really wasn't as bad as you seem to be making it. We were never told to convert everyone that was the jobs of the priests, nuns, missionaries, etc. It was good enough to be a good practicing Catholic.
I eventually dropped my religion because I grew up and realized that ALL (Decent)religions preach the same thing. I could preach to myself just as well and not cost myself anything in donations. I could pray in church and never leave my front step. I could pray when and IF I wanted. I am still in keeping with most religions and believe that Whomever is really in charge of Heaven when I get there will allow me in. There are tenets in ALL religions which I do not agree with but I don't believe all Religions are cults.

So Herb are you a atheist? You believe in no organized religion at all. Interesting to say the least, but then everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. I don't think you'll go to hell, but possibly that place in between, where you will suffer for all eternity.
