I have never, in my entire life, seen things as bad as they are now.....and continuing downward.

"There are going to be a lot of cold and hungry people this winter. What is the solution? What are we going to do?"

When I read that letter from a Yonkers woman in the Daily News, I felt a chill go through me. Winter's coming...what are we going to do??

Guess what, to every apt dweller/co-op/condo owner your maintence will be jacked up, and eventually will be forced out of NY and those that are below poverty level, well, they will either sink or swim. This is happening all over in other states as well.

I just saw an article that people who fly for the holidays are already booking flights because their afraid of hikes in fares. A flight from Tampa to NY in Dec. is $286 round trip right now, and a flight from Tampa to Miss. is $799-1,023 roundtrip.....everyone is scared, but what can John Smith do about it? Not much, we just go with the flow and hope for the best.

I hear ya Paula. The poor will get the assistance, the rich won't give a damn and as usual the middle class will be out in the cold! Pun intended.

That's all well and good Jose, but what happens when they start, which they have, cancelling flights, or the airline goes under? By winter we may see a lot more of this.

Absolutely! I happen to live in a Mitchell-Lama co-op (which is strongly rumored to be going private at the end of its 50-year run, which is 2012..........UH-OH!) and management has already secured approval from NYS for TWO $40/month increases ~ one started this month, and the next one a year from now. So we've already had our rents jacked up, but I can't blame them either, with the price of oil & everything else going through the stratosphere.

I never thought I'd say this, but I am SO HAPPY to be a "senior citizen" now!! We are the official "untouchables" in the current insanity, since NYS has a SCRIE law (Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption) along with sympathetic courts and judges.

Phil told me "Don't worry about 2012...I'm sure we'll be seeing the Big Mushroom Cloud long before then, especially since I'll be retiring soon...!" He also said "We're going to have to break our furniture into sticks and burn them for heat in our living rooms this winter!"

I'm not kidding when I say I'm scared.....

Then the airlines will go under too. Is this the beginning of the end for America???
