Okay, Dennis, now you've found a secret chamber right in the center of my heart...Johnny Mathis! I was totally IN LOVE with him thru all my teenage years, fan club, 'autographed' picture of him up in my bedroom, anything I could find! Many years later, I met some friends from those days and the FIRST question(s) they asked were:
1. Do you still love Johnny Mathis? 2. Are you still fighting with your father? When I was working for CBS-TV in the late 60s, I heard he was going to be on the Ed Sullivan Show. So I asked one of the make-up men if I could possibly come to the studio that afternoon and (maybe) meet him...? He said "Sure!" and here's the proof (my "Tinkerbell" days.....) http://www.paulasworkshop.com/someNiceThings/pages/001.htm He was SO nice, he even asked if I "minded" that he wasn't dressed for the picture (he had just finished make-up, and was about to don a tuxedo.) MIND?? I couldn't get close enough to him...and Henry Mancini took the picture! How's that for making a dream come true (well, almost...hahah)??? |

One of my Angels best friends in the entertainment business was a fellow born in Brooklyn, NY but grew up on Long Island, he has a fantastic voice and was taken under the wings of the one and only great Johnny Maestro, Tommy went on to secure the name "The Crests" and had great success until a few years ago, now with the great doo w o p group The Legends of Doo w o p Tommy continues to perform with Jimmy Gallagher formerly of the Passions, Steve Horn of the Bronx 5 Sharks and Frank Marcuso of The Imaginations: Tommy is the greatest and a personal friend:

You know, you absolutely AMAZE me with your knowledge of 'old' songs, and ALL music. You had no way of knowing this, but that song is the very FIRST song I remember from my childhood!! Seeing him on TV, falling to his knees as he was singing "Cry," I used to cry along with him!!! God bless you for your inquisitive, searching mind, LUPO! |

Jose, I LOVED The Crests as a kid!!! Wow, that is SO COOL to know the person behind that great voice!! I just Googled Tommy, and found that the "doo w o p" group he's touring with are part of the following UNFORGETTABLE smash hits!! Jimmy Gallagher of the Passions – “Just To Be With You”, “I Only Want You”, and “Gloria” Steve Horn of the 5 Sharks – “Stormy Weather” & also sang bass for the Del Vikings “Come Go with Me” Frank Mancuso of the Imaginations – “Guardian Angel” and “Hey You” ************** "Well, love-love ya, darlin', come and go with me....." "Just to be with you-oo-oo-oo..." ************* I should have studied my school books as much as I did that music!! AAAAHAHAAHAHAA!!!! Thanks! I certainly did "enjoy"!! |

THANK YOU MY DEAR PAULA...
I KNEW YOU'D LOVE IT... |

Belmont, my Angel was surrounded by some of the best entertainers in the business, she loved what she did, and she'd entertain for free for charity and good causes. She formed a bond with each and every group that she came in contact with, and even today, they all willingly come to events that are in her honor.
BTW, The Legends of Doo w o p are based on the East Coast of FL, many many of the groups are here in Fl. where doo w o p is King. For many years I followed my Angel's tours up and down the East Coast. Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss, and ends with a teardrop....... |

I'm with you Paula I just love Johnny Mathis, and my favorite song is the 12th of Never. I really enjoy Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr,Perry Como, or Tony Bennet.Perry never got the recognition he deserved.Frank had his moments just like Al Martino or Jerry Vale or Andy Williams did.I was never overly thrilled by him, and I liked him better as he got older.
I love Edyie Gorme, Peggy Lee,Judy Holiday,Judy Garland and Rosemary Clooney too. I love all of the Motown Sound. There's a standing joke in my family and that is, if you hear that sound and the music is blaring, mom is cleaning!! I'm sort of like Murphy Brown!! LOL |

Norie,
DITTO! (And I still "blast the music" when I clean!) My neighbors probably don't know what to make of me. In the space of one day, they may hear everyone from Peter Tosh to Sinatra to CBS-FM "oldies" to Dean Martin, James Taylor, and back to Peter Tosh again! I just love having music on in the background all the time (unless I'm in a 'quiet mood' and have to think.) "You ask how much I love you, must I explain? I need you, oh my darling, like roses need rain You ask how long I'll love you, I'll tell you true... Until the 12th of Never, I'll still be loving youuuuuu....." That's especially for you, Norie! |

You guys are really good. I'm intergenerational, so my faves include Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Doris Day, Joni James, Connie Francis, Eydie Gorme and Barbra (best voice of all). I could have loved Janis Joplin had she come along before I became a snob.
Fewer guys that I was crazy about...Tony Bennett (Because of You is my favorite song to this very day), Jerry Vale (best voice of all), Frank Sinatra, Frankie Laine, Eddie Fisher and Buddy Holly. |

Jose, forgive me for not asking you this sooner, but who is "your Angel"? You obviously love her very much. So glad to hear that doo w o p is still recognized SOMEWHERE. Radio stations in this country have short memories. Shame on them! Paula |

My Angel was lead singer for a Bronx group called The Innocents, she started singing at age 12 and continued till her death several years ago. She shared the stage with many doo w o p acts, Johnny Maestro, Legends of Doo w o p, The Chimes, The Capris, Larry Chance, Arlene Smith, The Duprees, Engelbert Humperdinck and so many other talented groups.
She was born in the Bronx, went to school in the Bronx, and eventually lived in FL. on the West Coast. In her neighborhood she was known as the "German Princess" she was loved and respected by all that knew her. May she rest in peace. Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss, and ends with a teardrop....... |
