The Bush administration said yesterday that it plans to start using the nation's most advanced spy technology for domestic purposes soon, rebuffing challenges by House Democrats over the idea's legal authority.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said his department will activate his department's new domestic satellite surveillance office in stages, starting as soon as possible with traditional scientific and homeland security activities-such as tracking hurricane damage, monitoring climate change and creating terrain maps.

Sophisticated overhead sensor data will be used for law enforcement once privacy and civil rights concerns are resolved, he said. The department has previously ssid the program will not intercept communication.

Democrats say Chertoff has not spelled out what federal laws govern the NAO, whose funding and size are classified. Congress bared Homeland Security from funding the office until its investigators could review the office's operating procedures and safeguards. The department submitted answers on Thursday, but some lawmakers promptly said the response was inadequate.

"I have had a firsthand experience with the trust me theory of law from this administration," said Jane Hartman (D-Calif), citing the 2005 disclosure of the National Security Agency's domestic spying program, which included warrantless eavesdropping on calls and e-mails between people in the United States and overseas. "I won't make the same mistake...I want to see the legal underpinnings for the whole program."

With all due respect Sandy, that thinking is like someone saying I have nothing to say so freedom of speech is not important to me!

P.S. Out here in California they now have non-English speaking Chinese (or some other Asian ethnicity) telling us what we can and can't do according to their cultural norms. For instance. we were told it was illegal to bring a leashed and licensed dog into a public courtyard outside the Asian Branch of the Oakland library (no english books in there folks). At the same time there were homeless people laying all over the place, kids pulling coins outta the fountain, and garbage all over. The inmates are running the asylum and we of euro-ethnic stock are now the enemy. Thank you all you liberals for making the country I defended for 20++ years so accessible to every third world illegal (I refuse to call them immigrants) coming in the front and back door. And just in case you all think you're immune, you still are paying for it.

Dennis: Invasion of privacy is very subjective. Credit agencies, insurance companies, banks and brokers have access to your personal information as does the IRS and the identity thiefs. What is there in your life that you find a need to hide from scrutiny?

Charlie: Your analogy sucks!!!

While We are being thankful...Thanks to all the Conservative run business's that have outsourced most of the decent paying jobs offshore and are now using the illegals they have made sure We have an ample supply of to do the jobs that could not be sent to a foreign land. Construction, farming, meatpacking etc.
When the nitwits finally realize it's the Government, either party, screwing America We may have a chance to take it back. If there is a country to take back.

Thank you for your comment Sandy. I don't think it was too bad but nonetheless you seem a little senseless in your statement that you have nothing to hide. It is not a question of having nothing to hide it is a question of privacy. A right that is included in the Bill of Rights and a right you seem to want to let the government take away. I really am confused and alarmed that you would give such a simplistic answer. The government has attempted to take away your right to legal search and seizures and free speech and you find no problem with further delving into your personal/private life and diminishing your Constitutional rights. If one person's rights are violated then all of us are in jeopardy.

What S.I. doesn't seem to understand is that it is not just giving up some rights, it is a raping of the Constitution. Reducing it to inane conversations with loved ones is not the point. It is the fact that the government can do it with impunity. Lastly, once that right has been given, it will never, ever be regained. S.I. wraps herself in the American flag professing to be a patriot who yearns for the old days. Well a person such as she is more dangerous than any terrorist for she would give up part of the very foundation of this country. Shame on you and shame on all of you who agree with her.
