How many billions of dollars have been spent on space exploration over the past 50 year? If and when we land on Mars, what will the result be? Since the Moon landing how did we benefit? I can understand the need for the satellites we use for communications and defense yet I cannot fathom why we continue to "explore" outer space. The only benefit is to the contractors who have received no-bid contracts during this fiasco. Waddya think???

While there are MANY reasons to explore space, including the countless examples of technological development that is a DIRECT outgrowth of spece explotation, particularly the moon, the ONE, and most IMPORTANT reason why we continue to explore space is a simple question that we have been instilled with. While not all have it to the same degree, there are those who keep it's vision alive.

And that question is: WHY?

Norie, what benefit can be gained by landing on Mars or for that matter, the Moon? Do we expect to find little green men with superior intellect than we have? As I said, there is a need for launching satellites for communications and to monitor our antagonists from afar yet I have yet to hear an explanantion as to why we want to go to Mars and Jupiter. However, if you were one of those who had an insatiable curiousity, and had to know WHY, HOW and WHERE, then you wouldnt have to be asking me that question.

Some people just had a sense that they have to go a little deeper, and get to the bottom of things, that somehow, there is going to be a payoff far greater than we can EVER imagine.

First off are we talking about the Space Program, or Landing on the Moon or Mars that's got you all twisted?
The Space program has given us a lot of solutions and ideas about many different things. One being about new drugs, another about Star War type weapons, animals and cell growth as far as cancerous tumors and how they grow. It's provided Satellite technology too.Again, I don't and we don't know what these trips all entail. The information they obtain and how it's used to manfacture things I'm not even aware of.At least we are getting some benefit from these missions. Tell me what benefits we get from building roads and bridges to no where, or the study of why worms come to the surface after it rains! You want to get more money for the people then write your representatives telling them to stop asking for all the earmarks, or better yet tell them to give up their salaries because they are not earning their wages!
There are many experiments they do regarding drug and how they related to the healing process. I can't tell you the why's or reasons behind everything, but if they can develope 1 drug to rid cancer isn't it worth it, or if they can develope one weapon that could destroy your enemy without affecting a whole race of people or country isn't it worth it?

The space program has come with with many inventions that have become standard items in many peoples lives. Examples are rechargeable power tools, smoke detectors, enriched baby food, a way to recycle old tires that is now being used to pave highways, ear thermometers. creamic dental braces, protective paint such as the type used on the Statue of Liberty, better cardiac pacemakers, scratch resistant glasses, better sneaker insoles. I'm sure there are many more, but these are the ones I know about.
