YOU KNOW, NONE OF US REALLY KNOW EACH OTHER,BUT SOMETIMES YOU CAN ACTUALLY FEEL THE 'WARMTH' COMING THROUGH THE WORDS ON THIS VERY COLD AND IMPERSONAL THING WE CALL THE COMPUTER.
I WANT TO THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR KIND WORDS, THERE REALLY IS NOTHING ONE CAN DO WHEN ANOTHER PERSON IS SO HEARTBROKEN, BUT READING YOUR REPLIES DID INDEED MAKE ME FEEL BETTER. YOU'RE A GOOD GROUP OF PEOPLE HERE, AND I WANTED TO TAKE A MINUTE TO TELL YOU SO.
P.S. HERB, I AM SORRY FOR YOU, AND I FEEL YOUR PAIN. IT'S SO SAD TO SEE AN ANIMAL THAT YOU LOVE LEAVE YOU, LIKE MY SUEY. I LOVE HER, AND I'M GLAD I GOT TO SAY GOODBYE....

My wife held the cat in her arms while the vet gave her the final injection. She continued to hold her for a while while sobbing.

We have found a place to bury her ashes. There is a spot in front of our window where she used to roll in the soil.

The ashes of my son's cat who went through similar problems a number of years ago is burried in the back lawn and we planted a tree over the site.

My wife has been sobbing everytime she calls one of the kids to tell them what happened. It is just hitting me as I write this message.

Fatkat,
I am so sorry to hear that you lost your dog (man's best friend). I never had a dog but I understand that it's like losing a member of the family. I had a cat when I was very young (4 - 5 years old). I remember that I wouldn't go to bed at night unless my cat came to bed with me. When the cat died I cried and cried.

herb,
I am sorry you and your wife lost one of your cats yesterday. It is sad when something you love so much is gone. But time heals all wounds.

Fatkat and Herb, I am so sorry to hear about both of your losses. I know how hard it is to lose a pet that you love.

Herb, I noticed Fatkat offered you her condolences, but you did not tell her that you were sorry about Suey. Take care.

Fatcat, Herb, and the rest of you who lost pets, I can sympathize with you. Last summer we had to put down our 1/2 German shepherd, 1/2 Chow, named Butkus. She (yes, she) was a big girl and just past her 16th birthday. In the last couple of years she couldn't get up and down the front steps easily, so I built her a ramp. When she couldn't hold her water anymore, we took her in. It's hard because they don't show pain the way we do, and I feel, if I can't improve their quality of life, then I'm not keeping them alive for them, I'm keeping them alive for me, and that is selfish on my part. We used to have 2 cats (Louie and Scooter) and Butkus and our Golden Retriever, Gracie. Gracie is now the only one we have left and we are contemplating getting another Golden. Goldens are so smart, they are unbelievable. Kim and I have been married 14 years this summer and don't have any kids of our own. These animals are our kids. Gracie is the only one left, she is 6 years old. The life expectancy of a Golden is 10-12 years. I shudder to think. I figure, if we get a puppy now and it's trained and a few years old then when Gracie goes, maybe it won't be so hard. Hopefully there is a place for these selfless creatures in heaven.

Fatkat, this is probably a silly belief, but I think animals are reincarnated. When my lab, Duchess died when I was 16, I thought I would never have another pet. A couple of years later, I found a puppy that someone had thrown into a garbage can. When I picked her up and looked into her eyes, I got something like an electric shock. It was Duchess's eyes looking at me. I firmly believe she had come back to me. I had the new Duchess for 16 years. I'm sure she's out there somewhere and one day I'll find her again.

Herb, I am sorry for your loss. This is a bad month indeed, as memories of when we put our huge Irish Wolfhound come to mind....at the end, she was still very much alert and responsive, she just could not GET UP anymore...that's the problem with large dogs, their hind legs start to go.

May they all rest in peace.

I heard through the grapevine the other day that there is now a company cloning CATS so people can in a sense, never lose their pet. I don't know if it's true, but personally I hope not because I find cloning abhorrant.

Fatkat, I'm so sorry to read about the death of your beloved dog Suey. Having two senior canines of my own, I know what you're going through. I can't imagine my life without them but I know that one day it's going to happen.

My most sincere condolences.

Herb,
Im also sorry to read about your cat. When my dog Moochie died of cancer I held her in my arms while the vet gave her the shot and I felt her heart beat faster and then he gave her the second shot and I felt her heart stop. It was the worst thing that I've ever been through in my life and I know how terrible it must have been for you and your wife.
After my Moochie's death I was in such a bad way that I wore solid black for 18 years. Can you imagine? All of the light was gone from my world and color became offensive. I only started wearing color again a couple of years ago but still lean towards the black and dark clothing that make me feel closer to my Moochie, who was a black Lab.

Mortality touches the heart.

Dear herb m,

I want to add my condolences on your having to euthanize your cat. I can only imagine all the terrible feelings that go through your mind at that moment.

At least you have her daughter with you still.

You and your wife should do something special to take your mind off this and cheer yourselves up.

Cordially,
YOGI

Don't laugh, but I had a cockatiel for 12 years. I felt terrible when he died.

Thank you all for the kind sympathy onoss of our cat. It help to know that others have gone through similar experiences and can understand how much a pet means to a family.

THANK YOU EDNA, I HAD TO COME BACK TO THIS TOPIC TO RE-READ WHAT YOU SAID, AND AS FOR THE 'HERB' WELL, IT JUST GOES TO SHOW YOU WHAT A PINHEAD HE IS. AT LEAST I HAD THE GOOD GRACE TO ADDRESS HIM ON HIS LOSS. BUT CLASS ALWAYS SHOWS. THANKS, EDNA

fatcat, I am not a warm and fuzzy person. As far as class goes, you have it--low class.

To fatkt and herb m.

Congratulations, you have tied for the prize of biggest board bozos. In a thread in which we have shared our common humanity; and our common emotional reaction to the deaths of pets that we loved, which many cultures would dismiss as unmanly or silly, you have succeeded in turning it into reciprochal ad hominem attacks.

The fact that you share the identical emotional reactions should draw you closer together as Americans, who almost all share the same feelings about "pets". How old do you have to be before you grow up?

Cordially,
YOGI

You're right Yogi, I should not have desecrated my beloved dogs site. Someone named Edna pointed something out to me, that I hadn't realized, so I went back and reacted badly. This is all brewing from another post, wherein Herb has just gotten my ire way way up, and I acted out here. My sincere apologies to my dog Sue, and you are definitely right. But please do not think of me as a bozo, I am far from it.

Knowing Herb a little bit, I don't believe he intentionally left out any sort of condolences, think he was going thru his own sorrow and just was a little negligent. In any case, my thoughts are with you both, its a hurtful time.
