'Abe Lincoln Was Not Gay,' Ill. Group Says on Presidents' Day

(CNSNews.com) - Abe Lincoln was not "gay," and the growing interest in this speculation is evidence of the cultural elite's embrace of homosexuality, the leader of a pro-family organization said on Presidents' Day.
The idea that America's Civil War president was homosexual or bisexual is now receiving mainstream media attention due to the release of "The Intimate World of Abraham Lincoln," a book written by homosexual psychologist and sex researcher C. A. Tripp, according to Peter LaBarbera, executive director of Illinois Family Institute (IFI).

Tripp claims that Lincoln and his close friend and bunkmate Joshua Speed were homosexual lovers, a conclusion rejected by respected Lincoln scholars, LaBarbera said. The author also selectively applies evidence and current sexual mores to a vastly different era, in which a shortage of beds often led men to bunk together.

According to LaBarbera, Lincoln scholar Michael Burlingame writes of Tripp's thesis: "Insofar as it leads people to think that Lincoln was gay, it does a disservice to history, for the evidence Dr. Tripp adduced fails to support the case."

"Other respected Lincoln scholars, including David Herbert Donald, concur with Burlingame, criticizing Tripp for sexualizing expressions of endearment between friends Lincoln and Speed," LaBarbera added.

For example, Tripp cites Lincoln's use of "yours forever" in letters to Speed -- words, it turns out, Lincoln used in correspondence with other men and leaders.

"Like the thief who thinks everybody steals, America's homosexual movement -- using the twisted 'scholarship' of Dr. Tripp -- is convinced that Abe Lincoln's warm friendships with other men must have been sexual," LaBarbera said.

"The tragedy is that Lincoln, who revered the Bible, cannot defend himself from the grave, and that even debating this ridiculous charge popularizes it," he added.

"Are schoolchildren now going to be taught that 'Abe Lincoln may have had a gay orientation,' just as 7th graders across the nation now debate homosexual 'marriage'?" LaBarbera asked.

"Here in the Land of Lincoln, we would ask that the media and academy show a bit more respect to the 16th president than the homosexual movement, which apparently will stop at nothing to advance its cause," he said.

According to its website, the IFI describes itself as "a non-profit, non-partisan group that defends marriage, family and life in Illinois."

IFI has working partnership with Focus on the Family and a working relationship with the Family Research Council as well as similar state-based organizations across the United States

This is the full desciption of the IFI. As such it is decidedly right wing. I have been to the site and it is anti-abortion, anti-gay, has some racist overtones. I have read the articles and have found the usual right wing distortions.

I was taught to read both sides of an issue, think about it, then form an opinion. Your trouble is you see only what fits within your very narrow world and refuse to even entertain the idea that you might be in error. If this differentiates a conservative & a liberal, then I'm glad I'm a liberal. You site extremes & it's OK. When I do it I'm wrong. Why is that?
What I consider degenerate is someone like Ken Lay (Georie's good friend) stealing from his employees and wiping out their savings. Why is it no conservative even wants to talk about this?

I never said it was ok for one to voice an opinion but not the other, so I dont know where that comes in. But insulting someone and denigrating them is vastly different than voicing one's opinion on Gays.
This person was posting on this board before we got here. I dont see how he has hurt anyone.

I went to my first one when I was pregnant. I was feeling a little depressed, and went with my childhood friend. I had such a good time that I went again the next year.

Dennis, I know very many kids involved in shooting programs at VFW's, FFA's and gun clubs. I can guarantee you that these are not the kids running around on the streets with guns. The parents of these kids are involved in their lives and know what they do and where they do it. And obviously they trust their kids. These kids learn how to handle weapons and they respect them. Remember, Dennis, if guns kill people, then...pencils miss spel words, ...cars make people drive drunk, ...and spoons made Rosie O'Donnell fat.

The media shouldn't be liberal or conservative. It should be objective. For democracy to work, you need informed citizens.
