That when President Roosevelt first introduced Social Security into law that one of the promises made was that any funds contributed to FICA would be placed in an Independent Trust Fund and not used for any other government programs.

Q: Which Political Party took the funds from the Independent Trust Fund and transferred it to the General Fund in order that Congress could spend it?

A: it was Lyndon Johnson and the Democratic controlled House and Senate.

Q:Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?

A: It was the Democratic Party with Al Gore casting the tie breaking deciding vote as President of the Senate while serving as Vice President.

Interesting stuff Mike.

I have been out of touch with the happenings since the debate.

Have you heard about the National Review writer who is callng for the removal of Palin as VP candidate.?

What do you think is going on with that?

Yes, Steve I saw the article, the writer was concerned with an interview that Katie Couric conducted with Governor Palin last week. I don't think anyone in the campaign was swayed as Senator McCain affirmed his support for her again during the debate the other evening.

What do you think of Senator Joseph Biden from the great state of Delaware stating Senator Hilary Clinton would of been a better choice then himself for the Vice Presidency of the United States.Although as we know she should be running for the Presidency on the Democratic ticket. If I went to my house of worship ONE TIME and heard my Leader say "GOD DAMN AMERICA NOT GOD BLESS AMERICQA" I"D walk as did Oprah.

All I know is, as I rewad this discussion, is that the market is down another 330 points. So much for Republican leadership and the bailout (read Wall Street early Christmas bonus).

If it looks like a duck...the fact remains that the federal government holds numerous IOU's for everytime they "BORROWED" from the Trust Fund to use elsewhere.

Where on the Social Security website does it refer to the Democratic Party?

Why are all of our concerns caused by the Dems when the Administration for the past 8 years has been Republican. The blame falls on ALL of the politicians in Washington, regardless of their party affiliation. It's time to institute term limits on all of Congress. The longer they stay in Washington the more they become corrupted.

Question A-1 refers to the action taken by the Johnson Administration. Question A-4 refers to the Senate tie breaking vote cast by VP Al Gore. You make an excellent point of term limits for all members of Congress. Familiarity breeds contempt

Paula, unfortunately, the history books tell us that yes, it can get a lot worse than it is today.

Thanks for your response, Mike. So how much worse can it get? We may have to give up a 2nd or 3rd car? 5th TV set in the downstairs rec room? Drive a sensible car instead of a 4,000-lb. gas guzzler? (I hope we have to return to horses! I'd have that little baby right here on my terrace, loaded up with hay...)

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY...THAT PARTY THAT WAS! (Thank you, Norie.)

It appears that the Dems could have passed this bill without any GOP support. 95 Democrats who may be up for re-election and were probably listening to their constituents lighting up the Capitol switchboard yelling NO BAILOUT voted against the measure. Whether or not the callers fully understood all the ramifications is another story.

RIGHT, MCCAIN AND BUSH MAY BE FOR IT, BUT NOT ALOT OF REPUBLS NORIE...THAT'S WHY IT DIDNT' GO THROUGH

The U.S. House of Representatives this afternoon rejected a $700 billion Wall Street bailout. U.S. Reps. Charlie Dent, R-Lehigh Valley, and Scott Garrett, R-Warren, voted against the rescue plan, which was aimed at turning around the country's financial crisis.
The Hunterdon County lawmakers, U.S. Reps. Rush Holt, a Democrat, and Mike Ferguson, a Republican, both voted for the measure.

Republicans voted two to one against the bill, while 94 Democrats voted no. On Wall Street, stocks plummeted as investors followed the developments in Congress. Stocks went down about 700 points, but recovered to about 500 points down by 2:05 p.m.
