I don't know about many colleges besides the one I went to. When I attended Mary Washington College, I sensed that its student body was actually quite conservative. I don't know if that reflects the whole Southern Bloc mentality or what. But anyways, the only real liberals were probably the professors and less than half the student population. The people there were actually quite religious-their IV, FCA, etc. etc. was like a machine. On the other hand, it did have its gay student association, human rights club, etc. etc.

The whole rightward shift in America shouldn't be surprising. It's been in the works since, what-1973? The conservatives simply have been working on it for 30-40 years. They are very well organized, have mastered political language, talking points, poured millions into think tanks ( American Enteprise Institute, Cato, Heritage Foundation, etc.) They've slowly worked their way up the party structure, paying thier dues, and so now the moderates are a rare species. They've expanded into Am radio and TV (Fox News, WorldNet Daily, FreeRepublic). Karl Rove in particular has been important firing up the base and using demographics technology to reach new voters. They have also forged an alliance between big business and the religious right, which makes them very powerful. They even have "training manuals" for young republicans on campuses all across the country. And of course, the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC)-the right-wing of the Democratic party-has a stranglehold on the democratic party. Finally, 9-11 has scared the crap out of people and it's easy to get swept along with the war drum beating. All these things add up.

It should be between ten to fifteen days. I'm actually very releived it is over and done with-I have more free time now.

ANother way to simply put it, I guess, would to call the Democratic Party the Washington Generals of Politics.
