I loved Herman Ridder! They had a great music department. Mr. Koepfler played wonderful piano and we sang "Serenata", and other wonderful songs. Mrs. Janus was adored by us all, in the Glee Club, and we sang at Carnegie Hall..."Battle Hymn of the Republic", and I sang the high "glorias". I got very good grades there, except for Algebra with Mr. Schrenzel. My math was always bad, and he, as other teachers did, would make me go to the board and write my outrageous answers down. Everyone would laugh. Robin Podolsky and I were the worst math students. God rest her soul. She died at 44 years of age. We were also best friends. Mr. Schrenzel, when he had a cold, would stick a Vicks inhaler in one nostril and leave it there and teach. Then he'd change nostrils! Weird! I had Mr. Kilduff for Science, and had a crush on him. I also had a crush on a boy named Freddie Torres, who was in Glee Club, too. Junior High was great. I got an excellent education at Ridder.

Kris,
I received the current issue of BITB today. There is an article about JHS 98 that I'm sure is of interest to you.

Go to the home page on this site. It has all the info on subscribing. It's a great magazine and the classifieds usually have people looking for other Ridder people.

Hi Laurie, I didn't get your private message as yet and may have sent my info incorrectly...you can write me at LaSaratoga@hotmail.com. Thanks..I also want to look up that Hermann Ridder site. I got a very good education there. Mr. Gerard, the music teacher was my homeroom teacher. He was a bit of a character, but really had a good band. I also remember a history teacher named Florence Gidansky, who was flirtatious with the boys. Mr. Kilduff was great for Science, and Mr. Rucker of Social studies caught me drawing a caricature of him, and sent me to the back of the room in disgrace. I was giggling, too! Thank God, I didn't put his name on it! He must have known, though, because of the likeness to him, lol. I'm an artist now, and have done many caricatures since. Anyway, I loved it all, and was sad to leave. I'll always have fond memories of Ridder, God bless, Kris

Laurie,
I have never scanned anything. I have no scanner and my computer is a dinosaur. I'd really like to help you but I think you'll be better off relying on someone else this time. Sorry.

If you like I can make a hard copy and mail it to you. If so, send me particulars by PM, or whatever it's called.

Kris-

OHMIGOD! That brought back such a memory of getting TOTALLY BUSTED in my Brooklyn junior high school...

In 1981, I was in 7th grade. We had a BORING & cranky & snooty English teacher named VINCENT PERRY. I drew a picture of him wearing a dress and running after a train (I can't recall what the train had to do with the joke) and I labeled the drawing "VIVIAN PERRY on the Run".... and I got CAUGHT! There was no way to explain my way out of that one! LOL My mom had to come to school to see the ass't principal! OHMIGOD I was in sooo much trouble!

LOL! Thanks for the memory jog...

-Michael

Oh, that's funny! Yeah I was busted alot, too. I was a laugher, and still am! I was frequently sent to the back of the room for laughing at something or another. I guess I always had a sense of the absurd, and some of those teachers were really absurd. Take for instance a typing teacher at JHS 98. Her name was Mrs Solway, or something like that. She looked like she stepped out of a closet with mothballs, and her voice and speech pattern were so odd, high pitched and singsong, many of us would laugh at her. We weren't being mean, but her mannerisms and everything about her just struck us funny. I guess I was least able to contain my mirth, so I was always in trouble. I remember one outrageous female substitute teacher, that when she opened her mouth, the whole class split their sides laughing. There was also a Miss Portnoy who taught English, if I'm not mistaken, and when she had a cold, would scrunch her nose to one side, and make such faces. It was hard to pay attention when Mr. Schrenzel, Algebra, taught, with a Vicks inhaler stuck up his nostril...then he'd change nostrils. LOL outrageous! I'm laughing now as I recall!

Me too! I never did anything "bad" or harmful but I was always in trouble for laughing, talking, jokes, socializing, etc... and I too thought everything was funny... and I still do! Never lose your sense of the absurd - it makes the world a better place!

... and someday when I don't have a pile to the moon of laundry staring at me I'll write about my absurd teachers! LOL

Hi Michael...Hurry and get that laundry done (or leave it), lol. I'm sure we'd all love to hear about your absurd teachers. I think I'll keep my sense of humor till the end! It sure beats crying over spilt milk, anyday. God Bless, Kris
