I used to go by the firehouse everytime Mom sent me to the A&P on 174th. I went to a parochial school (Grade 1-8) on Webster and 171st St. I did spend many hours in the PS-70 schoolyard however. I was back in the nabe on the 3&4 of October of this year. My building is still occupied.

Oh, I thought you had attended PS 70. I remember when the A&P wasn't there and it was just an empty lot. So we used the grocery store on Monroe and the green grocer on 174th and there was a Daitch near Morris Avenue on 174th. And sometimes my mother would walk to Bathgate Avenue to the butcher and chicken market as well as the infamous appetizing store! The chicken market was a live chicken market where you selected your bird and they would kill it for you and then you paid a guy 25 cents to pluck it---WOW----think that would work today?!
