I didn't like it. But, then again, I wouln't've liked anywhere in the sixties. I was a bull-necked jock in a school where the nerds ruled. Even Hayes and Mount were more studly. When I enrolled a white shirt, tie and jacket were mandatory. By the time I was a senior, I wore a denim "thug jacket". If there had been sweathogs I would have been president. In the course of four years I experienced academic detention, disciplinary detention and 'you get on my nerves' detention. There was a shooting war going on and a draft -- the nerds intended to wait it out in college with their deferments.

Students failed out. I only went there because my brother had failed out and I wanted to top him. We lost an entire class of 40 male students in four years and most of my running partners were gone. My Latin instructor told me I wasn't stupid -- I just refused to learn Latin. He wasn't far off. My Spanish teacher thought I was headed for the penitentiary. In this 'co-institutional" institution, girls were way on the other side of the building and rarely encountered. It was well known that instructors slapped students (one was caught on camera in the act) and I hated being knocked around. One instructor was holding a coffee cup when he grabbed a student. The boy laughed when the coffee sloshed onto the man's hand so this vice principal threw the coffee in the kid's face. By the time I was a senior, I put in the minimum effort and left each day at 2:45 for my night job. I wasn't involved in any after school activity, not even intramurals. The smart kids were merit scholars or got NY state scholarships. I got a regents diploma and a limp handshake. But then ...

When I got to college it was deja vu. I had done all that stuff! I had to go to summer school for math in high school but I aced it in college. I'll be damned if I wasn't on the dean's list! Since I started out bad, my parents made me keep it up and I graduated from college with two sets of honors. I blame it all on my high school experience.

Nucky good to see you back on board. What year did you graduate?
My high school years were sort of like yours. I went to PS#80 was a real tough cookie, rebelled against everything. That was the year they started to desegregate, and they bused in hundreds of black kids. Then I went 1 year to Art&Design High School.Left NYC and moved to a little place in upstate NY. When we moved up here it was a total transformation. I too graduated with honors and went to college much later and graduated with a BS degree with high honors. It's amazing what influences can do to you.

I think Hillary Rion is now Mrs. Hillary Spaziante. She graduated Spellman in '71 but I didn't know her.

My good buddy Bob Nugent graduated Hayes in '70. Perhaps you knew him. He played football and we were rivals.

Yes I knew him. #72. A really nice guy. I was known to play a little football myself. I was #s 87/88. And our rivalry was with The Mount. Spellman was just a practice game for us. LOL If you see Bob, tell him that Ed H says hi!

I was #85 at Spellman. I agree that Hayes was not in our league. Your team kicked a field goal in '67 and we won anyway. Didn't you have a halfback named Diamond, or some such?

I'm trying to find Bob now for our 40th class reunion and I think I have an address.

Not according to my memory. In '67 Spellman's varsity football team beat Hayes at Spellman. I was there.

I was referring to the '69 game. I had my year book in front of me. Yes, I still have it!

Well, I didn't play in '69. There was a new head coach and many players jumped ship. Otherwise, the result may have been different!

Hey Haj, I am an old team-mate of yours and I will back you up that Spellman was a warm-up game. I may be the only one who remembers that you scored the winning touchdown against the Mount in 69.
