Do you remember Hakes pharmacy on Marion near Fordham? That was my grandfather.....
That would be Fred and his brothers Michael and James....they lived at 2557 Marion....I just finished Fred's memoir of growing up on the block...titled Bainbridge, Marion, and Decatur. I'm having a Senior Moment about the Pharmacy...where on Marion was it?

wow, I just ordered the book off Amazon - I think the first reviewer was my old babysitter (maybe..)
Right across the street from the library and the Methodist church was Hakes pharmacy, I could probably scan a picture and post the link... or does this site use HTML?

OK! gotcha ya...don't know if you can upload a picture other than an avatar. Did you go to OLM or PS 46? What High School? Enjoy the book

So I guess that was '57-'60 or so cause I was born in '52.
My granfather was the pharmacist and my grandmother was a second grade teacher at PS 67? or 62? over by the zoo and kinda near Arthur Avenue.
Did Fred talk about I think it was Mr Friedlander who was in a wheelchair, I think he lost his legs in the war?
I can't wait to read the book.
Fred graduated OLM Class of 56 which is why you would not remember him. I moved into the neighborhood in 65...Marion Ave was a great place to hang out back then!
Marion Ave sure got messed up later though... my grandfather died in '72, and theneighborhood wasn't too hot by the early '80s but my grandmother wouldn't leave. She was mugged several times, one time actually pushed into her apt by some guy who came up behind her as she was unlocking her door.....

Sad. She died in 1990 on her 90th birthday.
You're right....makes me sick to see what has happened to a once wonderful place to grow up...The NY Times ran a big article with pictures last year titled "A Long Losing Battle". The drug dealers have taken over the streets and the decent hard working immigrants living in the area are virtual prisoners in their own apartments!
Although Huey's was not exactly my neighborhood candy store (that was Herman's on 194th and Bainbridge), we used to go there to buy a cheaper version of the Spalding they called "seconds". In the early 50s a Spalding or "Spaldeen" cost 25 cents...the "seconds" were only 15 cents but were cheaply made and had a shorter lifespan. Huey's also had Mello-Roll ice cream rolls which came wrapped in paper and would fit into a specially shaped cone.
