Does anyone remember the candy store on Monroe Avenue between 174th and 175th Streets. It was owned by Jules Kaplan who had three sons who helped run the store.
Of course,Julie's--a father and his 2 sons as I recall. We bought school supplies, egg creams, hung out--the whole NYC candy store experience.
I lived down Monroe, across the street from Julies and the fire house, the second house from the Cross Bronx. I graduated from Taft in 1968,went to Wade and PS 70--I was there when they gave PS 70 a name--but I don't remember the name, maybe schonberg?
Well I graduated from Taft in 1959. Glad you remembered Julie's----actually Jules Kaplan and his wife had three sons and the middle son married my cousin. Jules did quite well and when the store next door was vacant he bought or rented that property and enlarged the original store which was just a hole in the wall place and he put in tables.
The fire house was something else, but the best thing was that fire insurance for the apartment was very cheap----i lived first at 1764 Monroe and then we moved to the "240" building which back in those days was a luxury rental! Ciao for now.
