Does anyone remember the Golden Rule candy store at the corner of Burnside and Anthony. It was WORLD FAMOUS !!! at least to us neighborhood kids. The egg cream bartender was Hank!!!
We used to hang out there every day! We'd read the magazines and Pop, the owner at the time, would kick us out. "What is this look like, a library?" he'd say. It was Pop and his wife Gussie who ran the store. Some of their kids worked there, too. There was Murray and Marty Zoota, who were twins, and their older brother Gene. Hank/Henry was the short order cook. Before Pop and Gussie it was run by a guy named Ruby. We all went to P.S.28, then the boys went to Creston and the girls went to EBB. I lived at 1996 Anthony Avenue between 179th and Bush streets.
Hi readers...well...you are talking about my Grandma Gussie & Grandpa Herbert. My dad is the oldest of the 8 kids...Marty & Murray the youngest, 18 years younger than my dad. My dad is now 80 and I asked him the other night re: growing up in the Bronx. He told me about the Golden Rule so I started doing some searches and found this chat. I now can't wait until it is morning East Coast time so I can tell him about people chatting about it! Any questions for him?
Hi! My dad's family lived at 1542 Milford Place but when they bought the store, they moved into an apartment in the building above the store. By that time, my dad got married and moved to Albany. Do you recall either of the 2 girls? I think they helped out in the store alot too.
Wow.. sure.. I lived in that building all my life until 1970. We used to hang at the Candy store all the time.. I remember when we all gathered there the night they were anouncing the draft lottery by birthdays. I was #339.
Hi Steve. Gussie & Herbert (the owners) were my grandparents. My dad is the oldest of their 8 kids. He just turned 80. My dad's youngest sibling is 18 years younger. I think mostly the 2 kids working there were my Aunt Shirley and Uncle Gene...Gene ended up taking the store over at some point. If it was 2 girls that you remember then there is one more girl. Were the kids boys or girls? p.s...this is fun as I'm sharing these posts with my dad, aunts and uncles and it is bringing back very sweet memories for them!
I recall 2 boys... The Candy Store was always the center of life in the neighborhood. From school supplies to Henry's egg creams, this was the place.. I fondly remember being told (time and time again) that "this is not a library" as we tried to read the comics or Mad magazine w/o buying. In the evenings, I would always go down to the Candy Store to wait for the papers.. we got both the News and the Mirror... of course, there was always time for an egg cream and a Drake's Coffee Cake. Mom always liked Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream and you guys had the best. More later on..

As you can tell, I havent been on in a while. I lived at 2055 Anthony between Burnside and 180th St. I used to pass the Golden Rule on the way to PS 28. Hank made the best egg creams !!!
A long time since anyone's posted here... I passed the Golden Rule about a year ago, when we were coming back from Yankee Stadium. It's not the GR anymore, but a dark, dank almost candy store. Ah, those were the days... Hope all are well.
Hi...good to see some new chats. More cool stuff to tell my dad about (per prior posts, he was the oldest of Gussie & Herbert's kids). I'll let him know the latest update. He's not doing so great now but he's hanging in there at 81.
