Lately, I've been craving a candy I used to get across from P.S.6, called a "Romanoff"...It was a chocolate covered marshmallow and jelly candy. Come to think of it, so many candies aren't made anymore. Now, there are just a few brands in the supermarket to buy, and there was much more variety years ago. Well, so much for my sweet tooth. Not good for the blood sugar, anyway, but Joyva jellies and romanoffs sure were goooooood! God bless. Kris

Oh boy, I still love halvah! True, Joyvah, I believe is the only halvah making company in the country, unless there's some smaller concern who makes it. Wonderful stuff, and it's still around, thank heaven. Marzipan! OH YES!!! There was a place on E. 86th Street in NYC that made wonderful marzipan. It was expensive even back then....almond paste, right? They shaped it into all kinds of things...colored fruits, any shape you can think of. Barricini candy, which we used to get everywhere in the Bronx, always had some nice chocolate dipped marzipan pieces in it. Where's Fannie Farmer now, and Barricini? The choice is between Russell Stover and Whitman. I don't even see Candy Cupboard anymore. There goes my sweet tooth again! lol. God bless. Kris

Hi Kris,
Yes, it is almond paste. The place on E. 86 Street was called ELK Chocolates. It moved around the corner to Second Avenue between 84th and 85th for a few years, because their building was taken down. They were right near a wonderful restaurant called Kleine Konditerai that also closed after a few generations in Yorkville. ELK just closed for good this year. Now I buy my chocolates (and excellent they are) in a place called Lilac. They have a store in the market in Grand Central Station and in the village (on Hudson Street, a bit south of 14th, I think).
Ah yes, you are a real, died in the wool, marzipan lover....Kleine Konditorei is exactly the place I was thinking of....they fashioned marzipan into little potatoes, fruits, and all sorts of things. They also had excellent chocolate cake and ice-cream sodas. When I was in my teens, I loved going down to Yorkville, and into my twenties. I haven't been there in so many years, I can't recollect, but I'm sure it's still a very upbeat place. Thanks for the memory. Also, they had wonderful Hungarian as well as German restaurants. Good stuff. Yummmm. God bless. Kris
