Does anyone remember a grocery store located on Jerome Avenue, directly across the street from the playground at St. James Park? This may have been at some time in the late 60s to early 70s. I believe the store owner's name was George. He manned the store along with his wife, and at times, his young son, Billy, would stop by after school. George would keep credit accounts for his customers in one of those black and white marbled school composition books. He also would tally the total of your purchases on the paper bag he would use to bag your groceries. I also remember him always keeping a pencil behind his ear at all times.
I have very fond memories of going there as a kid and buying candy, snacks and even some sandwiches at tines. I would exit the store by saying, "put it on our bill". No questions asked. Anyone remember this place? |
