Louie's at the corner of Clarke Place and Jerome Ave.

He used to charge us a penny for one of those paper cones of water.

The "vous" on the corner of 182nd and the Concourse and "Mammas" on the opposite side of the Concourse. Went to St. Simon Stock at the time. There was also the Paradise Shoppe next to the theater on the Concourse.

Somebody mentioned a Freddy's on Middletown Rd, but there was another Freddy's (unrelated so far as I know) on White Plains Rd just south of Pelham Parkway.

At the risk of starting a war: They made the best eggcreams (real U-bet syrup). Also a pistachio malted that we called the Green Monster. Yum!

Do not want to BRAG but my folk's made the best egg-creams ever! Mickey's 4227a White Plains Rd E 234th Street. Remember Boston Coolers, 7up and a scoop of ices in a blender Ah! I remember it well. How about frozen snickers or three musketeers bars frozen on a popsicle stick for six cents.

I can remember virtually every store on the hill between Morris/Selwyn at 172nd Street and Sheridan (the uphill end). The Candy Store was the third one up the hill, staring with the drugstore on the corner, followed by the Chinese laundry. I didn't remember that it was called "Levine's" until eyedocpa told me in an e-mail a while ago. I can't remember it ever being referred to as anything but "Da Candy Store." It was the classic set-up in every way, with the newspaper stand out front. It had one unique aspect. Directly across the street (172nd st.) were the stairs leading into the Taft HS Schoolyard, where almost all of our neighborhood ball games took place. In spite of attempts by eyedocpa and yours truly, only Barry Berger has come foward to claim this candy store as "the old hangout."
WHERE ARE YOU GUYS??

Hi Pete for your information I spent of last Saturday with Artie Levine the son of the owner of the candy store. I'm sure you knew him. He and my brother Bob are still close friends.

Hi Barry,

I think we exchanged a few thoughts during my first time on the BITB bulletin board about a year and a half ago. I do remember Artie, and have some photos that Ron sent me which include him and your brother Bob, back in 1952 or thereabouts. Have you or Art encountered any of the other guys? I posted some of the names I remember in the "Lost Friends" forum. So far nothing. I can't believe all of these guys have gone to the Glorious Bronx In The Sky! If you want to explore this further, my e-mail is PWKal@aol.com

Hi all! Now living in Florida's west coast. Still miss the OLD Bronx of course!
I remember Mary's on the corner of Bainbridge and 194th during the 60's & 70's. I think it was Herman's before.
Also Huey's Candy store also on 194th near Briggs Ave. Conrad used to serve us our Egg Creams and soft pretzels that were on a stick.

Pete, from the fieldstone building on Bainbridge Ave north of 194th Street! The number 4 bus route was (still is?) there.
