Yvonne - Back in the Bronx - in the 50' / 60's a DOM was a Dirty Old Man - in this candy store, you just never knew what Joe/Pop was straighening up behind the counter.
Yvonne - please remind me - how YOUNG are you? What year did you graduate HS ? (not a problem - you just seem younger than most other posts)
No - no - not lack of ed - just lack of years - I often wish I had less years. I graduated HS in '65, so I'm not in my forties - lol! My father was born and rasied in Hell's Kitchen - someplace around W 41st and Amsterdam - back in the 1920's. I hear that it's changed and still is changing - since then - ha-ha.
My mother was also raised in Hell's Kitchen she was born 1921 and still tells tales of her girlhood there as the next to the youngest of 11 children. I think the Hell's Kitchen now known as Clintonville is a far cry from what it once was?
Kathleen - About Hell's Kitchen ~ I did a little family genealogy, but don't have a lot of info, as my parents and grandparents are deceased. My father's parents, my grandfather (James Flynn)lived at 103 Amsterdam Ave, my grandmother (Cecilia Brannigan) lived at 546 W. 44st, and they were married in St. Raphael's Church on 502 w 41st - I have a copy of the marriage certificate. BUT - then after my father was born, 1919, I have an address of Amsterdam and w 41st - but it's second or third hand info. With all those Irish names - maybe we're related - lol.
Eli & Myers between 174 & 175 on McCombs rd the best egg creams next tp P.S. 82. Just don't caught stealing those penny candies they would ban you for life.
I used to go to the candy store on the corner of 170th and College ave. I see here on BITB it is listed as Rappaports. I didn't know that back then. I lived at 1460 College Ave. in 1965-1970. Next to that Candy Store was a Shoe Repair place, a Jewish Synagogue and even a little record shop.
I happened to notice that there is a list of candy stores on this site. One of the stores is listed as Wilkins Sweet Ctr. 1342 Wilkins Ave. That was my grandfathers restaurant/luncheonette, not a candy store. The name of the store in the 60's/70's was Willies Sweet Shoppe (I'm pretty sure it said Willies as my Grandfather's name was Willie, I could be wrong though, It very well may have said Wilkins). Every member of our family worked in this luncheonette. I was only in the 3rd grade when I was waiting tables there and/or working the cash register. Yes, I got in trouble for working the cash register too well, if you know what I mean. Across the street? BusterBrown, Hardware Store, Candy Store. Next to the Sweet Shoppe? Woolworths, Drug Store, G.M.C. clothing store, Meat Market. Those were great times, every shopowner on Wilkins Ave. came into our luncheonette every single day to get basically the same dishes, unbelievable!

Hells Kitchen must have been different in your fathers day, I don't remember Amsterdam ave coming down below 57st or something like that. Amsterdam turned into 10th ave in Hells Kitchen.

i never lived in hell's kitchen, just went there for high school. it was a block before the old madison square garden, and across the street was the french polyclinic hospital. we used to have orange juice, coffee and a donut at nedick's for 15 cents in the lobby of msg. that's where we'd decide whether or not to play hooky.
dad was brought up in jamaica -- 157th street and suften blvd. or was it 173rd... or 137th??? or suphten? 8>
i'm 59 y/o, and escaped to maine from throggs neck in the bronx 18 yrss ago. i'd be dead if i hadn't. (don't handle stess well)
