Hi BronxBob,

If you are ever near E 234 and White Plains Poad look for 4227A that is where my folks owned what useto be a Candy Store from 1953 to 1966 It was called Micky & Helen Dolan's. I have not been back to the Bronx for about 4 years my brother now lives upstae NY so we head that way when we visit NY. Thanks

I bought my first real cigaretts there in about 1947 they sold loosies at 2cents. Bought them with the deposit of a couple of bottles found in St. Mary's Park. I lived on the other side of the park so figured I wouldn't get caught. (8/9 years old at the time).Had a girl friend at 500 Trinity and I was trying to impress her by smoking in public.

Thanks Bob,

4227a the Candy Store was the second half of a hoisery store to the right and Prestano Bakery was on the other side. Their was a grocery store called Loven's on the corner. How do you manage to get around the Bronx "finding nostalgia?" It must be an interesting job thanks again Bob.

corner of 173rd street and bryant avenue. comic books .10 and small sundaes with whip cream and cherry on top. best cream soda from the fountain ever. bazooka bubble gum .01, babe ruth .05. the owner were refugees from ww2 concentration camps - we loved them alot. they would tell stories of their lost families. we didn't get it back then. when i was in college is when i learned about the tattoos and such.
by the time i grew up and left. they had gone to be with their families. they were great people.

The name of the store in the 60's/70's was Willies Sweet Shoppe (I'm pretty sure it said Willies as my Grandfather's name was Willie, I could be wrong though, It very well may have said Wilkins). Every member of our family worked in this luncheonette. I was only in the 3rd grade when I was waiting tables there and/or working the cash register. Yes, I got in trouble for working the cash register too well, if you know what I mean. Across the street? BusterBrown, Hardware Store, Candy Store. Next to the Sweet Shoppe? Woolworths, Drug Store, G.M.C. clothing store, Meat Market. Those were great times, every shopowner on Wilkins Ave. came into our luncheonette every single day to get basically the same dishes, unbelievable!
Tony;I used to live directly across the street (right over the Buster Brown store, 3rd floor) I knew your grandfather Willie. I use to go in there all the time, my father would send me over to get meat loaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans, it was delicious. The store was originally called Wilkins Sweet Shoppe, when Willie bought the store, the original sign was not taken down, but it was definitely Willie's. The inside of the restaurant had the original tables and chairs from the sweet shoppe (this is the way it was spelled on the pink neon sign) and a counter with stools. If I close my eyes I can visualize Willie's face with his black rimmed eyeglasses and white cap. Thanks for the memory. Do you have any pictures of Wilkins Avenue? Would love to see.

Kitty's for candy, and Moe's for comics and those great rinky-dink toys like miniature cameras with built-in pictures, and cotton-tipped "cigarettes" that would puff powder "smoke." Both stores were within a couple blocks of each other on East 183rd, not far from PS 32.

Does anyone remember Kramer's candy store on Tremont and University? 2 for 1 cent malted milk balls, egg creams. Does anyone know where I can buy candy apples- they were a hard candy with yellow on one side and red on the other and had a hard light pink inside?

I've looked for that forever and I just can't find it.

Kitty Morance and her husband's candy store, lower Tremont Avenue, near West Farms Road. They let us hang out and made a nice black and white soda..I loved to collect the bubblegum charms, too when I was at PS6 across the street Coveted them like gold, lol. Then there was Luhrs on University Avenue....boy what great stuff they had.
