The candy store we spent time at was Eli & Myers on west 176st and McCombs rd. We lived in the building next to the row of stores which included eli & myers. Sitting at the counter and having an eggcream and pretzel was a daily routine. Sampling the candy on the sly had to be confessed each sat at church! Born 1953 i was a regular there until 1967 when we left the bronx for long island. My Dad would send me down to eli & myers to get him the journal american newspaper and i would take a peek at the national enquirer which was "off limits" back then! Boy have times changed!!!

Dear all:
I just registered to the forum. My name is Alessandro. I'm from Italy but I live in New York where I'm also studying for a Phd in history. I've been reading this forum with particular interest since it happens that my dissertation topic is about vocal harmony groups from the Bronx, and the use of space among youths in the 1950s and early 1960s. Part of my research is on the candy stores of the Bronx which were so important for youths and the music of those years. I would love to hear from you about your experiences in the candy stores. If you would like to participate in this research project and being interviewed for an oral history (as part of my dissertation) of the candy stores I would be very grateful. If interested, please contact me at abuffa@ic.sunysb.edu Thank you very much for your attention, and congratulation for this nice discussion board. Alessandro Buffa |
