There was a very busy corner candy store, across from PS6 on E. Tremont Avenue. they had romanoff candies, Joyva jellies....oh gosh, those were great, chocolate covered marshmallow bars....one and two cent candies, AND they had french fries which they put in a tiny paper bag, and they'd give us a toothpick and ketchup to eat them with. I probably still have residue in my arteries from that. lol. Of course, there was a penny gum machine outside, and I saved charms...had a whole collection. Mike, They tasted so gooood. Of course, they were fried in lard, which is verboten these days. I think eating with a toothpick made it all the more interesting, and then there were Joyva jellies for "dessert". Oh yummmm! God bless. Kris

Hi Moosie, They sure did. I've tried and tried to make a decent eggcream at home, to no avail. Someone said Canfield's chocolate soda and milk fit the bill, but they don't sell Canfield's up here. I'll have to look into it. Polar makes a chocolate soda, but it's diet, and Waist Watchers makes the weirdest tasting chocolate soda I've ever had, so that won't cut it. I think they used U-Bet syrups back then, too. Remember the huge glass containers with the colored drinks in them, and the orangeade with the aluminum paddle that you could see churning the stuff? Wow, I just remembered that. Then there was lemonade and I guess what was limeade, but it had extra added green coloring to it. Nobody worried in those days. It's amazing how memories flood back. Hi Mike....Grand Union used to sell it, but they're out of business up here. I have to check Price Chopper and Hannaford's...maybe even the Walmart Super Center, and see if they carry it. I think U bet used to make other flavored syrups, too. I think they're an old Brooklyn based company. Nice to see some of the older companies are still in biz. God bless. Kris
