...I knew Iran Barkley from growing up in the same projects as he did - Patterson Projects. I can still remember that lean kid with the well-groomed afro. Admittedly I wasn't in his inner circle of friends to know that he was into boxing, like that. Or, that he was well below his grade level for reading.
However, he did become a 5-time World Champion boxer across at least 3 weight divisions. His shining moment came when he dropped Tommy "The Hit Man" Hearns on his back in 1988.
They painted a mural of Iran, on a wall facing the Patterson projects center basketball courts, which could be seen during the late 80's into the 90's. But, it may be gone now that they've done renovations and made changes to Patterson.
I believe his mother still lives in Patterson projects, as he occasionally comes down to visit, hang out, and yes, play the numbers down at the number hole...
