Hello Fellow Bronxers;
For a number of years, actor-performer, Sylvester Stallone has been working on a script on the life of Poet-Writer master, Edgar A. Poe. Finally it has reached production level. Stallone is writer/director. It will be interesting to see if he gets him right? The "Bronx" Poe of Fordham, is a whole different Poe of Griswold's character asassination he did shortly after his death of drugs, alcholism, and morbid depression. Later Griswold did recant his comments, but the myth he created still sticks to this day. I hope Stallone understands this, and is able to bring to light, the real Edgar Allan Poe, who was mostly the opposite, and a genius of word play and true intrigue. The real Poe of Fordham was a sensitive and feeling person, who's wordspeak had a deepness far beyond that can be imagined. No Joke...I even question if Poe really died in Baltimore, becaue of what "he knew" of those secret days he lived. Yep, it will be a refreshing change to finally see Poe from a truer different light. Here's to you Edgar and Sylvester!!! Al |

Hello Mickey;
Most of Poe's biographies are based on the after effects of his reputation that was done by a "Mr. Griswold" after Poe's death who he dispised... creating the "Poe Myth" that he was a morbid depressed man, a drunkard, drug user, etc. Much of this myth is not true. It is alledged that "Mr. Griswold" recanted his defacing damage to Poe years later... but the "Poe Myth" still lingers to this day. In my research on Poe, Our official NYC/Bronx Historical Lauriett, Prof. Lloyd Ultan showd me a book named "In Defence of Poe", witten around 1875 by Dr. Robert Moran, claiming to have been the residing ward physician at Washington Hospital, having personal privy to Poe's deathbed confessions... quite a different Tale of Poe indeed!!! I was later shown a 1926 edition of "Israfel". The Life and Times of Edgar Allan Poe, By Hervey Allen. When I read both books, it definately dispelled for me "The Poe Myth" originally perped by "Mr. Griswold", and a different Poe emerged, which was additionally supportive by Prof. Ultan as well. Being that I have had "Cousins" in The Bronx (Before it was called The Bronx), going back to the haunts around Fordham, additional rumors were also supportive of Poe's life much more diverse and provocative... A genius of Wordsmithing bar none! There is a recent biography on "Poe" that was just published... But I had not read it yet. I plan to get a copy, and hope it turns out to be new and accurate information on him. What I understand and defend on my POV on Poe, is on the Internet as well. Thanks; Al |

Yes he certainly was, and no one around today can match him. Amazing how one person could smear another, and have it stick as fact. Thank you for this Al. |

Thanks SO much for that input. Aside from those biographies, which story or book of stories written by Poe would you recommend as a starting point?? ______________________________________________________________ Where love rules, there is no will to power, and where power predominates, love is lacking. All of Poe's stories delve into various subjects. I think it depends on what aspect of Poe you wish to explore?
Al PS: oops... My mistake, It's Dr. John Moran, not Robert. |
