Mike, What about shoe shines 50 cents, "fishing" for quarters and dimes in subway street gratings, selling the Daily News papers, beverage bottle deposits, grocery delivery, snow shovelling, collecting old newspapers and selling for cents/lb.
No weekly allowances in those days! You went out and earned it.

My first job was collecting the shopping carts on Jerome ave. for Olinskys supermarket.I did such a good job ,they taught me the cash register.I made change without counting on my fingers (like you see kids doing today).From there ,they taught me the produce dept.Then stocking and ordering for the whole store.All except the deli.I did'nt want to know about white fish,herring and all the jewish delicacies.it showed me I could do anything I put my mind to.

My Dad was the manager of the produce department for International Supermarkets. They had 9 stores in the Bronx and Manhattan. He got me a job as a junior bookkeeper in the office down on 170th and Southern Blvd. I worked 3 afternoons and all day Saturdays. It was great experience and seemed to lead me into my career in the financial field.

I worked at a little ice cream kiosk. God it's been so long, I can picture it, but I can't remember near what entrance. It was pretty close to an entrance. I used to eat the "crunchies" all day, lol. I didnt last very long.
I keep meaning to go back for the Holiday lights around Christmas, but I never seem to have the time. Have fun, dont go on "free" day. lol. there are millions of people there on free day.

I wouldn't venture anywhere that was 'free'...that means all the lowlifes are there.....yep, that's just my opinion.
My first summer job was in a Harware Store around 1968. The store was located on Jerome Ave just south of Gun Hill Road. I earned 95 cents an hour. How the world has changed.
Allan I know it was awhile ago ,but do you remember the name of the store? I can remember one that was one or two stores off GunHill but can't remember the name.I worked in Olinskys super market on Jerome in the 60's.I think the owners name was Harold . He always looked like he just woke up.Wow ,this is bringing back memories.And next to the hardware store was a fruit and vegetable store with the displays half on the sidewalk .This is scary.

that store was harolds and his wife was rosalie. they are still very involved with comunity events in the area especially at the MMCC. they had 2 children. i remember them well and my mother always shopped there..

Now that you mention it I can see his wifes face.My mom shopped there as well. Screens for the windows and those big window fans for the hot summer nights.That store was good for all the little things you could'nt find anywhere else.

They were the sought after premium brand. I had to settle for the Alexander basement skip specials! I heard that!...that is where dear old Mom got mine until I had the money for the 'CONS'.
