Anyone remember the weekly St. Helena's dances in the late 50"s and early 60's? seems like they were on Sun. nights. Guys and gals from all over the Bronx used to show up.

Was St. Helena's the Catholic School in Parkchester?

I attended Monroe, and in 1963, there was a large number of St. Helenas students (I believe from there) who transferred to Monroe due to the rising tuition costs at St. Helenas. I was thankful for that, because, I met my soon-to-be girlfriend Ann (Dollyann) Williams in my senior year at Monroe (1964). She lived on Gleason Avenue, just behind the Metropolitan Oval Movie House.

Ann and I fell in love almost immediately, and are still in touch, although 38 years passed before we were able to find each other again. "Classmates".com took care of that for us.

Dollyann stood out immediately to me, and with good reason; a darling of a woman, with a heart of gold, a sense of humor, a smile I would kill for, and a personality I had NEVER experienced, and will never experience again.

Somethings time CANNOT erase.

Yes Steve, the elementary school is still at Olmstead and Westchester. The HS where I attended is out on the Hutch approach to the Whitestone Bridge.

No, by then the dances had ended. As for getting to school....BX-20 on Fordham to West Farms Square (180th and Tremont) and transfer to the Q-44 out to the Hutch.

I have been in Texas so long that I forgot the freedom we had to go to pretty much any school we could pass the exams for. I too took 2 buses to Mt. St. Michael.
Our guys were pretty evenly split between Hayes, Mount, All Hallows, Fordham, and Clinton.
In Texas the kids go within a district to a designatrd elem,MS,and HS.

Remember the St.Helena's dances well - lived in Parkchester - met up with a bunch of girlfriends in "the Oval" and walked down to the dances, where we would stand in little groups waiting for the boys to ask us to dance.

Always leaving room for the Holy Ghost!
Remember the little room upstairs where the volunteer dads would spin the records? And the wooden floor of the auditorium/cafeteria/theater/church?

The High School was out near Ferry Point Park, but the dances were held in the Grammar School, which was just outside of Parkchester. Thanks for the memories!

BIC forever!
