My parents loved Shorehaven; I hated it. I prefered tar beach. When I got a little older, and my friends had cars, we went to Jones Beach or Squantz Pond in CT.

I lived on Clarence Ave. and was a member of the D.A. Beach club, I still stop by there when I visit the Bronx. My mom has been a member since she was in her early twenties, shes 75 years old and now is the president of the American Turner Club.

We were members of the D.A. Beach Club - in fact, we lived next door the D.A. Beach on Clarence Avenue & Randall Avenue in Throggs Neck. My mom is the longest standing member of the D.A. - she's been a member since her teens - she's now 76 years old - she even had her wedding to my dad (reception) at the D.A. close to 52 years old. Both my daughters were raised in the D.A. - my eldest Nicole (25 years old) was one of their star swimmers. It was great growing up in the Bronx - right on the water - what can be better. My mom, myself and eldest daughter are still residing in Throggs Neck - unfortunately, my younger daughter Danielle was murdered in Pelham Bay on 2/23/06 by her x-boyfriend and it's become almost unbearable to live in the Bronx since her death because of all her memories - I've been flying back and forth from NYC to Washington State (staying with relatives) since her death - my next trip to NYC is in February and hopefully, after 2 years, I won't become depressed seeing her friends, our old house on Vincent Avenue & Lafayette Avenue.

Re the Castill Hill Pool and Shorehaven Clubs - my husband and family belonges to the Castill Hill Pool (Schiaffo) and I knew people joined the D.A. when the Shorehaven closed. The most memorable person from that group is Nancy (they call her Nancy the nurse) - she use to work in Calvary Hospital.

I went to a Pool Club called "The Concourse Cabana Club". I don't remember where on The Grand Concourse it was but we got there by train. This was in the late sixties and early seventies.

Bookends: There was a Pool Club between 167st and 170st on Jerome Ave that was visible from the # 4 train. The Grand Concourse was only 3-4 blocks away. Does that ring a bell?

Yes!!! Yes, it does SkyDog! Thanks! Great times we had there, swimming, bbqing, playing ping pong and they had a great concession stand with yummy french fries sold in a white paper cone cup. Good times! Dunno why but fries with ketchup and salt always tastes better when eaten outdoors.

Thinking back, maybe there were two different clubs in the area. Is that even possible? Someone earlier mentioned that Cascades had a pool with fake sand around it. That, in no way describes The Concourse Cabana Club, unless of course we're talking about the same place in two different time periods. I went there in the late sixties/early seventies. Perhaps earlier or when it was first built there was sand around the pool but not in the late sixties.

Sorry for the triple post but this thread is jolting my memory. My friends who were more well off than us went to Shorehaven (mentioned earlier) while we went to the more local Bronx club. I was under the impression that Shorehaven was in the more luxurious borough of Queens and that their pool was set up to look like a beach. For anyone who is familiar with Shorehaven, is this true? Also, it's funny but here and there I've asked people from NYC if they remember Shorehaven but nobody remembers it! I guess I wasn't asking the right people! LOL

Isn't Shorehaven the name of a hospital for the insane on Long Island, I'll have to check my diary and see if this was the name of place I stayed at.

To be honest, I never heard of these beach clubs before I came to this forum.
