Well, with last night's rainout and another possible tonight, and maybe even on Friday, the World Series is likely to be on hold until the weekend. I sort of want to root for Detroit, but that's hard to do with what they did to the Yankees. The Cardinals are an interesting team, and it wouldn't hurt my feelings to see them win. I took note of the fact that the Tigers and Cardinals are two of the orignal 16 major league teams. When was the last time the World Series had that matchup? Not too long ago, I think. I'll look it up unless someone with a better memory than mine wants to post the answer. In any case, it looks like there'll be baseball in November again.

Can you believe the Tiger pitchers? Our local sports columnist used "D(E-1)troit" in todays piece. (My parentheses) Leyland said he was thinking about having PFP (Pitcher Fielding Practice) on the plane. I'm happy for the Cards. I love David Ekstein. There's a lot of Derek Jeter in the way he plays. MVP indeed!

If you only care when the team you root for is not in the series. Then you're not a true baseball fan. |

I agree with Barry's comment. I was bummed about the Yankees' early exit, but baseball, especially the World Series, is a great spectacle no matter which teams are playing. Now for the awards. Jeter will be the MVP!

YES, I believe Derek will get the MVP (rightfully so!)

About my comment a couple of posts ago regarding an original 16 major league teams Series matchup: Of course, as Barry was quick to point out, it was the Red Sox and Cards in 2004. But before that you have to go back to 1976 when the Cincinnati Reds beat the Yankees 4-0. All other series between 2004 and 1976 involved either expansion teams or original teams which had changed cities.

Don Mattingly was promoted Wednesday to Bench Coach as heir apparent to Joe Torre who will probably retire at the end of next season. Lee Mazzilli's contract was not renewed.

Any info on why Lee wasn't renewed? Who's the new batting coach? I wonder how much input Torre will have regarding his heir. Not much baseball news in our local paper.

Hi Pete, no clue on why Lee was let go...Mattingly appears to be the heir to the manager's office which is why he was moved up to Bench Coach next year...the new hitting instructor I believe came from the minor leagues.

Mazzilli was let go because Torre was not.

I see where Sheffield was shown the door in a very efficient manner. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, Gary. Good riddance! I only wish his rehab would have fallen short, and maybe we could have had someone in the lineup who could have produced something against the Tigers. Three young pitchers are worth a lot more than a malcontent DH.
