This weekend marks the end of an 85 year era of the Cathedral of Baseball at 161st Street and River Ave. Sunday Night will mark the last game that will be played at the old ball yard before she is torn down later this fall. I have many fond memories having grown up just 15 minutes away.

Thanks Mike for the reminder. I myself am very sad to see her go. That 1.3 bil. across the street may be nice but it is new, with no tradition, no history. And in this economy the new one is going to have a hard time paying for itself. The renovated stadium is only 32 years old and they renovated her from the ground up. Why is it so dillapidated now? Fenway is the oldest stadium in existence and it seems to be doing OK. Well, it's done now. No longer can we say THE HOUSE THAT RUTH BUILT. SAD, SAD, SAD. Prospect Ave. Guy |

I agree PA, if they tried this in Boston or on the north side of Chicago, the fans would be marching in the streets.

You got that right Mike. Just finished watching the last game televise by YES channel. Pitchers duel and Canoe the hero in the bottom of the 9th. Because it was the last game by YES, they ended their broadcast of the game with the song "There Used To Be A Ballpark Right Here" sung by none other than the Chairman Of The Board. Yankee Stadium and Francis Albert, both A CLASS ACT. Prospect Ave. Guy |

And there used to be a ballpark Where the field was warm and green And the people played their crazy game With a joy I'd never seen. And the air was such a wonder From the hot dogs and the beer Yes, there used to be a ballpark, right here. And there used to be rock candy And a great big Fourth of July With fireworks exploding All across the summer sky And the people watched in wonder How they'd laugh and how they'd cheer And there used to be a ballpark, right here. Now the children try to find it And they can't believe their eyes `Cause the old team just isn't playing And the new team hardly tries And the sky has got so cloudy When it used to be so clear And the summer went so quickly this year. Yes, there used to be a ballpark, right here. Prospect Ave. Guy |

Thanks Mike for the reminder...
It just seems like a million dreams? The mere idea that the last games gleem, the last call of summer's pass. ...and in the October winds of Fall, here comes the final pitch, of the yankee's wrecker ball. Gone is an era in Winters pall, gone is "our" park that had it all. But toward the Spring, a new place will call the ever uniting yell... Play Ball! Once more |

The Stadium always has, and always will hold a very special place in my heart.
I was BLESSED to be a Yankee fan from the time I was perhaps 5 (1951), so I grew up in the time they were in the Series virtually each year whle I was in public school, and I had the honor of watching players such as Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Gil McDougal, Whitey Ford, Elston Howard, Bobby Richardson, Hector Lopez, Tom Tresh, Tony Kubek, Clete Boyer, Moose Skowron, Johnny Kuchs as a kid. Ok, I WILL mention Roger Maris. The beloved monuments, and the right-field porch (297 feet) are etched in my mind, as is straightaway center (461 ft), Casey Stengel, Mel Allen, Bob Shepard, the 161 St. Station of the #4. I apologize if I left anyone out. My heart and my life were blessed, as I had the privelage of watching my beloved Yankees play in Yankee Stadium, the ballpary SYNONYMOUS with baseball. I SHOULD mention the Football Giants as well. I enjoyed many moments watching them in the Stadium. YA Tittle, and Frank Gifford come to mind. And of course, Bob Shepard, was and will ALWAYS be the voice of the Yanks and Giants, with that slow speech, that just oozed history. |

Well, it's official. At 11:41 p.m. last night (9/21/08) the last game in old Yankee Stadium ended with a winning note, with the Yanks winning by a score of 7-3. Pre game activities was excellent as well as post game, all on YES channel. The Yankees did themselves proud to their fans, and a tear was shed by many. Congrats to Johnny Damon and Jose Molina for their final home runs at the old lady. No matter what ANYONE may say, I don't think there will ever be a stadium celebrated like this one. And rightly so, as there were many records set here and historical events held. It will even be a sadder day when they dismantle her to put in three baseball fields sometime in the near future. I guess change is inevitable, but in this case a VERY SAD DAY INDEED.
YES, THERE USED TO BE A BALLPARK, RIGHT HERE. Prospect Ave. Guy |

I can see fans feeling sorry, but remember that this is nothing more than greed. There is nothing wrong with this stadium. When you get to it, the house that Ruth built was destroyed in 1976.

ANOTHER AMERICAN LANDMARK BITES THE DUST! HOW SAD, THEY COULD HAVE LEFT IT AS A MUSEUM WITH ALL OF THE YANKEE MEMORABILIA THERE. I KNOW I WOULD HAVE PAID TO SEE THE STUFF.

A good portion of the old stadium was in 76 stadium. The new stadium has no of that. They also tore down a park to build it. All for 22 box seats. |

Those are LUXURY boxes! On a similar note there is supposed to be a stadium sell-off at MSG. At first I thought it would be parts of the stadium. Then It came out that they were going to sell baseball, rings, and the like. Go Figure... |

You said it all BUT you left out the Scooter. I was in NY this past weekend - LI to be specific - at a party to celebrate the stadium. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house. As Bill Crystal once said about Bob Shepard - "The voice of God". Grow Old But Never Grow-Up and No Tan Lines |

I've been a Yankee fan all my life but I was still surprised by the strong emotions I felt
watching the last game. All those memories of not just the game but the people you went to them with. |

AMEN GIBBY, THERE COULD NEVER BE ANOTHER.

I was fornuate to go to the final game and it was emotional for me, got to shake hands with Whitey Ford on the plane coming up from Florida. and about 1am they kicked us out....awesome day for the grand old lady to retire....
about 85 percent of this stadium is the original, only the top of the upper deck and the lower half of the field boxes were added, the rest is 85 yrs old.......I will cherish my stub and my handful of dirt, god bless "the Cathedral" |

I flew in from Chicago to catch the last Red Sox game and shed a tear when I watched the last game on ESPN. Long live the memories.
