  • Ex-Yankee GARY SHEFFIELD has recently spoken out and said that while he was there Yankees' manager Joe Torre treated black players worse than (or unequal to) whites. And he goes on to say that when asked if he thought Torre was racist, he said "No".
"I'd see a lot of white players get called in the office and treated like a man. That's the difference", says Sheffield who said that Torre singled him out during a June 2005 team meeting for their embarassing play against the St. Louis Cardinals.
  • Former outfielder Raul Mondesi also once accused Torre of letting white players work through batting slumps while dropping African-American and Latino players to the bottom of the lineup. With that, we wonder why an injured and long-slumping Johnny Damon was kept at the top of the order when you keep a healthier Robinson Cano batting at the bottom ....?
  • Sheffied also adds that Tony Womack and Kenny Lofton, both black, were handled differently by Torre.
  • I guess that he'll further elaborate on all this come Tuesday when the HBO REAL SPORTS interview will air --- check local listings.

I wonder how many Japanese players think that the black and hispanic players are treated different than they are?And I'm sure that if these millionaires wanted to work a little harder and take extra batting practice to work through there problems that torre would'nt say they could'nt.It's funny that when sports figures CAN'T make it in new york that it is always someone else that did it to them.As for handling people differently, that is something that is touchy. Some people need to get their a s s es handed to them and some people need to be handled with kid gloves as not to hurt their feelings. I think torre has done a good job with all the personalities he has to work with. So ,once again a big named sports figure is blaming someone else for his short comings.

Sheffield is a spoiled person with no real class. I am still shocked at my own hispanic players for not comming out and make him appologyse for telling them that they weren't man enough to be talked to with (respect) like his race demmanded.
Some one someday will shut him off.
Maybe AL SHARPTON??

Speaking of "Rev" Al Sharpton, and not to change the subject, where is his support for the two police officers that were shot last week. One officer killed, RIP, and the other wounded.

Seems that the "Rev" Al is a one-way kind of guy!

Gary Sheffield is a player of color who dares to bring a social consciousness to the game, and who won't just go along with everything just for the sake of "getting along".
  • When the Marlins first got him and required him sit with a team psychologist, who pointed out that he should be more like so-and-so, and so-and-so (naming off non-controversial black players) Sheffield upped and walked out. He recognizes, that in sports, in business, in schools, and everywhere in society there are going to be people of color who were taught to "go along for the sake of", and who try never to make waves even in the face of injustice or inequality.
  • Not every person of color is going to take indignity quietly. Many do. They've learned that unless it's overt (like someone using the N-word) it's best just to swallow it up and keep it moving. But make no mistake about it. Subtle inequalities take place all the time.

Gary Sheffield doesn't believe that he has ever taken steroids. According to him steroids is something that is injected in the buttocks. He never did that.
    • He said he did use a clear gel that gets placed under the tongue, and the cream, which both are used for muscle recovery.
    • He housed with Barry Bonds at the time, and in time left, because Bonds became controlling when it came to workouts, and etc..
    • Sheffield says that if he had taken any steroids, how come he doesn't look bulked up like the players reported to have used it?
    • Actually, remember that they haven't formally officially charged Barry Bonds with taking steroids.
    • Sheffield's uncle is Dwight Gooden. When no one else in baseball would, the Yankees gave Gooden repeated chances, stuck by him and waited on his rehabilitation. Let's ask ourselves why would Sheffield want to knock anything about the Yankees or anyone connected to the organization unless he saw something that was wrong, despite all they've done for his uncle?
