Does some one know the author of this quote?

"If one wants to know the hearts and minds of Americans, study Baseball."

I seem to remember that it was a Frenchman...

Would you happen to know the date?

Thanks,

A French historian, in 1954, said ''Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball.'' This remains true over 50 years later, and as the U.S. and India quickly study the hearts and minds of each other, I would encourage anyone who wants to learn about America to learn baseball. More than any other cultural institution, baseball -- since it began in the early 1800s -- has been the fabric which has bound America together. For us, it is the sport that links generations; parents teach baseball to their children. It unites cities, it transcends political parties, does not discriminate between rich and poor, and has even led America at times, such as in advancing racial integration. Baseball terminology - phrases such as "3 strikes and you're out" and "touch all the bases" - is part of our everyday language.

Thanks,

Thanks Mr. Bronx,

You got me started. I would have thought it was stated at an earlier date.

It's still bugging me. Does anyone know the man's name?

Baseball As America
“Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball,” wrote French-born historian Jacques Barzun in 1954.

Game and nation evolved together. Since the sport first emerged, baseball and America have shared the same values, responded to the same events, and grappled with the same social and economic issues.

Baseball came of age amid the inventive exuberance of 19th-century America, and continued to mature during the rapid change of the 20th. Our growth as a nation and a people is mirrored in the dugout, on the diamond, and throughout the bleachers. In baseball, one can glimpse our entrepreneurial spirit, our values and self-image, the tensions and triumphs of embracing diverse traditions while forging a sense of community.

Like a family album, the “national game” reflects our changing priorities and passions, our spirit and character. It has inspired many of our shared rituals and continues to mirror our unfolding story.

Thanks!

I got it off the Baseball as America site.

It was a great traveling exhibit. I saw it twice, however I seem to remember the quote before I saw the exhibit.

Regards,

A few of his more famous ones:

* "A nickel isn't worth a dime today."

* "It gets late early out there." -- Referring to the bad sun conditions in left field at the stadium.

* Once, Yogi's wife Carmen asked, "Yogi, you are from St. Louis, we live in New Jersey, and you played ball in New York. If you go before I do, where would you like me to have you buried?" Yogi replied, "Surprise me."

* "Do you mean now?" -- When asked for the time.

* "If you come to a fork in the road, take it."

* "90% of the putts that are short don't go in."

* "I made a wrong mistake."

* "I always thought that record would stand until it was broken."

* "Why buy good luggage? You only use it when you travel."

"It ain't the heat; it's the humility."

* "The towels were so thick there I could hardly close my suitcase."

* "You should always go to other people's funerals; otherwise, they won't come to yours."

* "I didn't really say everything I said."

"Nobody goes there anymore, its too crowded."

Recession is when my neighbor loses his job, Depression is when I lose my job.

Recovery is when Milhouse loses his job.
