Did you use old mop and broom handles or buy the "official bats" with the tape at the Candy Store?

In the Kingsbridge section " official bats " were for wimps: only we rarely used the term wimps.

The Candy Store variety was too expensive.

lol....good topic.

I posted a similiar response a while back, but let me say that anyone who BOUGHT a stickball bat on Evergreen Ave was routinely laughed at, and ran home, tail between legs. Not to mention that the tape stuck to your palms, leaving a black mess on them, especially when you were sweating!

My mom wasn't very happy with me "borrowing" her broom handles, especialy when she had, oh, 5-6 bottoms in the broom closet, and no handles(our bats).

Of course, the real problem for me was that the handles were generally pretty warped, which made it a little hard to hit a straight fastball, but a breeze to hit the slow curve!!

I can STILL hear the woooooosh sound the stick made when you took a full swing...

woooooshhhhh...

lol and GREAT memories.....
