An 8 part mini series begins tomorrow night on ESPN at 10 PM Eastern. It will tell the story of the 77 Yankees with footage of events in the Bronx and throughout the city that infamous summer.

. . . The memories come flooding back as this series progresses. And not only of the turmoil and intrigue surrounding the "Bronx Zoo" but also of other things happening at the time.
  • The Son of Sam murders also bring to memory the Eyewitness news reporters of the time, namely, the stoic Roger Grimsby, the classy and gentlemanly Bill Beutel, and the Shaft-like John Johnson and there was Roseanne Scamardella, the tongue-in-cheek Larry Kane, and the unwitting target of his barbs, weatherman Storm Field. Not to mention Spencer Christian and "let's go to the videotape" Warner Wolf
  • I remember reading Daily News sportsbeat writers Dick Young and Phil Pepe.
  • Remembering many folks in the neighborhood walking around with brand new sneakers and shoes the next day after the previous night's looting from the Blackout. Remember stores with bent back gates and broken window fronts? There were plenty of vandalized automobiles too.

I can remember when President Jimmy Carter visited Charlotte Street and proclaimed the South Bronx as the worst slum in America. It was rubble and empty lots, and abandoned buildings. Occasionally you'd see a stray dog poking around for scraps.
