Barnitas had the best pizza. The owner's kid used to play in Gobel Park with the rest of us. Every once in a while, they would bring some pies over to the park. if you were part of the in crowd, you used to get a slice! I used to sit in Barnita's waiting for our order and just stare at the moving lights on the Beer sign. It looked like a waterfall! Do you remember Leo's barber shop on Mt. Eden?

my Grandmother lived on Marcy PLace and in the 60s she used to take me to buy shoes at the Bunis Bootery on 170th, and many trips to Johns Bargain Store (was that on 170th?)

Dear Olinville 61:

I am responding to your email regarding 170th Street, and John's Bargain Store. Yes, it was on a 170th Street with loads of bargains.

170th Street was quite the area with every conceivable store on the planet. I guess you read my article.

Let me know how you remember 170th Street.

Awaiting your response.

Hi Bronx Buddies! I lived on Elliot Place, 133 to be exact. I'll fill in some of the store names: Friedhoffer Bakery, betwwen Walton Avenue and the Concourse; Sen-Ho Chinese restauarant 170th Street near the Concourse, Merit Farms on 170th near Jerome Avenue; Mels Key shop, a hole in the wall on 170th a door or two from Jerome Avenue; Sonat Jewelers (I worked there as a kid polishing jewelry, 1964-65). between Jerome and Walton Avenue. On the other side of the Grand Concourse, past the Luxor theatre was Benny's Appetizing! Anyone have old photographs of the inside of Benny's?

I moved from the Bronx July 1965 to the wilds of Forest Hills, NY. Boy, do I miss the tastes and smells of the Bronx.

Hi Mike:

Nice to hear from you. I hope you're well.

I remember Mel's locksmith store. It was so tiny. If you blink your eyes you'd miss it.

Many keys were made there. He was a nice guy. I wonder who runs it now?

I hope Faye the tropical storm is not near your area. It's unbelievable what this storm is causing. I hope the government kicks in.

Take care.

Best regards,

Cynthia R. Eaton-Rotkin

Hi Mike:

Thank for emailing me. I'm glad Fay just gave you high winds and rain. It's terriable what happen to most of Florida.

In a case like this, their homes are ruined. Once rain gets into the foundations and walls of these homes, problems of all sorts sets in. Dampness and mildew stays forever.

I spelled the tropical storm (Faye) incorrectly.

Do you remember Rudy's Italian Restaurant on Jereome Avenue? Some one wrote in regarding this restaurant, at the moment I forgot his name. I often ate there, the food was excellent.

The good old Bronx, it had everything! It will never be like that again. We were the lucky ones.

I hope the storm keeps moving out of your area. It was a very slow tropical storm, and very damaging.

Well take care of yourself.

Best regards,

Cynthia
