In another post someone mentioned Louis Sherry Ice cream. Does anyone remember other brands of ice cream that are no longer with us?
Borden's comes to mind, as does Schraft's,& Dolly Madison. Recession is when my neighbor loses his job, Depression is when I lose my job. Recovery is when Milhouse loses his job. |

I remember all of those brands, but Louis Sherry was my favorite. Breyers, Bungalow Bar and Good Humor still exist, I believe, but they don't taste the way they did in the Bronx in the 40s and 50s. Remember the Good Humor chocolate malt pops? UMMM.
For that matter, remember real malteds? |

Bungalo Bar had malt pops. That was my favorite. I never bought Good Humor; it cost more than Bungalo Bar.
There are still a few places that make malteds similar to what we had in the Bronx, although they put in too much ice cream and not enough or none of the very cold milk. |

Louis Sherry is still made? What about Sealtest?

What about Bryers? The candy store where I lived used to scoop it out fresh, It was soooooo creamy. I was brought up in the South Bronx 152nd and St Annes Ave.Went to all the stores on 149th st.Alexanders Herns Freeds Cushmans German Pork Store.Later moved to burke ave. Had lots of friends on 187th st and Arthur ave in early sixties. went to all the feasts and loved all the Italian specialty stores.Used to go to soccer games I think the teams were Milano and FordhamItalians |

Then there was hand packed Ice cream. I do believe tha Baskin-Robbins still does it. Why does it cost more? Did Jahn's have their own brand? Recession is when my neighbor loses his job, Depression is when I lose my job. Recovery is when Milhouse loses his job. |

About once a month while in my junior year at Monroe HS, after spending the night at Poe Park, then off to the White Castle on Fordham Road or Allerton Ave for a bunch of 12-cent hamburgers and onion rings, we would head off to Jahns on Fordham, and about 6 or 8 of us would split a "Kitchen Sink".
We finished it, but were somewhat queezy as we left the table.......AAAAAAhhhh what memories...HAHAAHAH. ______________________________________________________________ Where love rules, there is no will to power, and where power predominates, love is lacking. The one is the shadow of the other. |

On Ward Avenue we had "Jimmy the Bungalow Bar Man". He had the business on the street locked-up. He'd pull up in front of 1154 Ward - a 96 Family building and have a long line. It always amazed me that they could stick their hand in the small freezer opening and come out wih the correct item - without looking.

Red, on Evergreen Ave, between Westchester and Watson Aves. the Bungalow Bar Man was Cristie (sp) and older man with pure white hair, and I too clearly remember how he could put his hand into that small opening into either the side or rear door, stretch out his entire arm into the freezer, and get the correct cone, sandwich, cup etc, every time.
I think that Jimmy used to fill in for Cristie when he was off. I always liked their truck, if I remember it was white, with a brown "roof" that looked like a cabin roof. Did you also have that other company come by (I forgot the name)? I do remember there was a hispanic ice-cream man who's name was Johnny, and I loved his "Cho-Cho Bars". The Bungalow bars were much more expensive, but were much better, as well. Finally, when I hit my later teens, we went downhill, and Mister Softee came on the scene. I never thought much of the bland flavored ice creams, and the "Mister Softee" recorded song drove us all crazy. ______________________________________________________________ Where love rules, there is no will to power, and where power predominates, love is lacking. We went for Good Humor over Bungalow Bar.

We would go to the Y&S Pharmacy, between Ward & Manor, for great sundaes and ice cream sodas. At one time Howard Johnson had icream trucks. I have a die-cast model of one. Always wondered what these ice cream truck drivers did in the winter. I remember that my sister-in-law drove a Good Humor truck as a summer job when she was in college.

School Bus Drivers, Taxi Drivers, and Students, come to mind. Recession is when my neighbor loses his job, Depression is when I lose my job. Recovery is when Milhouse loses his job. |

Jimmy, who parked his Bungalow Bar Truck on E. 172, outside the schoolyard at PS 77, went to Florida for the winter. Oh, to have one of his pistachio pops again.

Just thought of this... Recession is when my neighbor loses his job, Depression is when I lose my job. Recovery is when Milhouse loses his job. |
