I don't remember that particular factory, but there was a similar one on Jerome Ave. near Burnside. Dad would take us down there Saturday nights and, as you, we would wait for the bagels and bialys to come out of the oven, piping hot in a brown paper bag. It was too much to wait to get home with them. Later on, I lived on the Grand Concourse near Kingsbridge Rd. and there was a bagel bakery just around the corner, right under our windows, which offered a very enticing aroma when they were doing their baking. Just thinking about it makes me hungry.

Hello Louis,

I am brand new to this site and as I read each post I AM back in the Bronx, the way it was, pristine, in my memory.
I go back when I need my Bronx fix and drive around feeling sad and nostalgic.
New Jersey just doesn't do it for me.

I do remember those huge bagel and bialy stores with the great fondness and, OH, that bagel store in the basement at Jerome and Burnside. The greatest memories of my father and me walking there together on Sunday mornings, memories burnished in my mind forever because of these places.
The bagels of today simply cannot be compared with those.

Off the topic of bagels for a moment.

Do you remember an italian restaurant called La Cilento? (on 183rd Street off of Jerome Avenue)THE BEST!!! My mother, brother, and I went to eat there evey week. I mist up every time I think of their food. And, don't get me started on their marinara sauce!!!

Do you think the new bagels of today are as good as the old union bagels of Yesterday. Does anybody know if you can still get the old style bagels

I DON'T SEE MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE IN TODAY'S BAGELS. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE, HOWEVER, IN THE BIALYS AND KNISHES. WHEN I WAS A KID I WAS TOLD THE REAL NAME FOR A BIALY IS A "BIALYSTOCK" AND IT WAS SHORTENED TO BIALY.

The old posts about bagels...wow...I too remember the store on jerome Ave. And just like everyone else, I had to eat at least one before I got home. Sometime they were so hot you could hardly hold them! Yes, there is a difference in the bagels of today compared to the old days. I think the older guys had more respect for their art. Now, it is just cookie cutter mentality! We had a good bagel store here in Tulsa. Unfortunately, the guy passed away and his kids didn't want to continue! shame, they were damned good!

Maybe it's just the glory of gilded memories, but I think the old style handmade bagels were superior. They had a more sturdy crust and were somewhat lighter inside, especially when they were hot from the oven. Later when they cooled off, the whole thing tended to get a bit soggy, so you'd have to toast them. But the flavor itself was different, even if slightly so, from today's lot. I think nowadays the emphasis is on a product that's easier to chew and can fit into a toaster. No regard for shiny crust and chewy insides.

While I'm complaining about things not being the same, I remember cream cheese as being more tangy, with more of a sour flavor than the stuff out today.

Colin the place you were talking about was Jerry's; great bagels. Billy I agree with you the old bagels were better; but you could only eat them the day they were made. After that you could use them for door stops

The only bagel store that I remember was on Jerome near Moshulu Pkwy. They were good and I liked the Sundew orange drink they sold as well, it went good with bagels.

I tried to revive an old bagel by putting it in the microwave and at first, it came out OK. But I had to eat it fast, because it got hard as a rock real fast, I couldn't even bite it, i wonder if I did my insides harm eating a bagel like that?

In the 70's,, 1973-1974. I knew someone from Clinton and I would meet him up near the stores on Jerome, sometimes at the bagel store, sometimes at the Pizza store.

How come all of the bagel bakeries I remember were in basements? If my memory serves, they only baked bagels on Saturday night, after sundown.

Herb, if you mean the one on Nelson Ave. just off of Macombs Rd I was under the impression that they only worked on Saturday night since that was they only time I was sent for bagels. After picking up the bagels I had to buy the Daily News and the NY Times from the vendor in front of the Park PLaza Theatre so that when my dad woke up on Sunday morning he had his crossword and bagels.
