It's tomato sauce and pasta. Pasta comes in different shapes, some of which are, ziti, spaghetti, linguini, elbows, rotelle, shells, lasagna, etc. etc. can't think of anymore right now.

Coming from a NYC Italian -
- it's gravy and macaroni. We know that it's really supposed to be "sauce" and "pasta" but when speaking to each other we say gravy and macaroni.

How good could it be if the cook is calling it "sauce and pasta"? lol
(just joking) But, lol, I have found that home made ethnic food is always the best. I have never had gravy and macaroni at a restaurant that has been better than something made at home by women ( and men) who have perfected the art of gravy making through generations!

The difference between a gravy and a sauce. Sauce is made without meat. Gravy is made with meat or from meat. Us Italians from the Bx. always put pork in our sauce to make it gravy and cooked it longer to thicken. How I miss my Mom's gravy.

It's funny because as I write this my wife is making a batch of gravy and meatballs for tonight's dinner. My wife & I are both Jewish. Many years ago (about 30) my wife got a gravy receipe from an older Italian woman that worked with her. Our Italian friends rave about my wifes gravy. We call it gravy because that was what her co-worker called it. Tuttorosa crushed tomatos, fresh basil, fresh garlic, fresh oregano, tomato paste, pork bones are the basics. She makes a very big batch and then freezes it in small containers so that we don't have to (heaven forbid) buy jarred sauce.

We call it pasta (as do most of our Italian friends) except for spagitti which we call....spagitti

You gotta call it gravy and to be exact "Sunday Gravy" as I used to go over to my friends house and we would have supper @ 1:00 in the afternoon when we came back from church. Pass the vino!

And I'm the devil! Now kindly undo these straps!
