I liked Cousins records and the magic shop that was near it.
Orange Julius was OK, I liked the drinks. Wow, that is if my memory is correct, I hope there was an Orange Julius on Fordham rd. I know I went to one in Manhattan.

Then of course there was Alexander's. I remember making a day of it and shopping till we drop there. Great prices! My sister was a Lord and Taylor girl always saying "you get what you pay for", well we happened to buy the same dress and mine from Alexander's (same label) was $20.00 she paid $38.00. Stayed an Alexaner's girl till they closed.

Big Burger next to the RKO on Fordham. Best burgers in the Bronx! Cooked on the grill at store window. I can still see the charcoal flames and smell the aroma. A wee taste of heaven in the Bronx.
There was ONYX clothes store ,about 2or3 storefronts from Webster ave. That's where I got my first Members Only Jacket.Wow that was 38 years ago . Man you guys are old.

Elrod, big burger, oh my God! The best! I used to order 2 hamburgers and my boyfriend used to order one, and I was 117 lbs, and 5 foot five, I could down those things like they were water. All burnt on the outside and rare and juicy on the inside. Wonder if I was there same time as you. What a small world, and how wonderful it was....
Barbraallen, it was a special treat to "pop in" to Big Burger.
Early memory (mid to late 60s)- Christmas shopping season on Fordham Road with a snow storm in full swing . Shoppers struggling through the slush and snow. Behold, a flash in the window with a welcome aroma of charcoal and cooked meat. An attraction few could resist.
It always seemed busy and sometimes difficult to find a stool at the small counter but it was worth the wait.
One of my best memories of growing up next to Fordham Road in the Bronx!
Are you still 117 lbs? Almost forgot--I drove down Fordham Road recently and made a special note to see if Big Burger was still there. Sadly, just as the rest of the stores on Fordham, it is gone.

Yes, I lived on Valentine Ave and 188th Street (60s - mid 70s). Walked Fordham Road almost every day. Went to OLM and All Hallows. Looked at the Dollar Savings Bank clock every day for time until I bought my first watch at Madows jewlery store (next to Valentine theatre). Growing up in the 60s, the neighborhood was great, never wanted to leave.

Graet memories!
I'm from 194 and Decatur. Class of 69 at St Helena HS.
There are so many food memories, they're almost too many to count. The whole street was a food paradise, from Webster to way over west near University Ave. I could remember the highlights as if they were still there. Merit Farms, slow cooked, grease on top of grease, but what taste! Used to get a whole chicken and corn on the cob with french fries, a heart attack in a bag. Then there was Zaro's bakery just up a little way, their bread was (and still is) heavenly.
Seems like there was just the right blend of food stores mixed in with the regular fare, so that you didn't have to walk too far before you could have a snack! I can remember walking into Sutter's on a freezing cold day, on a mission to get some Napoleons and eclairs for my grandmother, who was expecting company later that day. The steam fogged up my glasses immediately, my face was freezing, but that smell of butter mixed in with the aroma of baking was worth any discomfort.
Aaah, my old nemesis Alexander's. As a child I despised the place, only because my mother seemed to spend so much time there. My mother was a confirmed Alexander's shopper. Just about every single day. When I got older and wanted to buy my own stuff they had the Groovy Shop on the mezzanine level, just up the steps to the left of the front door. Oh, the records we bought in there, I still have some of them.
