As I said earlier, there are soooo many places we used to pig out!
Merit Farms Forbe's soda fountain The "H" luncheonette/soda fountain Schell's Cafe The Lido restaurant Jahn's Horn & Hardart retail store GORMANS FABULOUS HOT DOGS Louis Donut shop Big Burger Brighton Cafeteria/Deli City Woolworth's counter, Kress luncheonette Krum's Corky's Sutter's Palace Delicatessen Schrafft's
And this doesn't take in what's West of Fordham Road. And I'm not listing the bakeries and other goody stores, like all the candy stores that were there (Loft's, Barricini's, Fanny Farmer, etc.)
Now I'm hungry. Again.

We did not get to Fordham Rd that much. We went to the hub. The food was not as good; but there was a good hot dog place just north of alexanders. Anybody remember its name?

I think you may be talking about the Nedicks location in the Hub.
I used to read the sports pages all Saturday night in Bickford's (188th off the Concourse) over coffee and smokes, after droppng my date off. I rarely (if ever) went to the one on Fordham, just west of Webster.

Often we ended our Friday and Saturday night galavanting around by a stop at Bickfords. Usually had an english muffin and coffee.
I felt sorry for those old folks who hung around at Bickfords. They had nothing to do but meet other old farts at Bickfords. They probably were divorced or never married. I promised myself I would not end-up like that.

One of these days, we are all going to be "those old folks" hanging out somewhere (smile)
Elrod, I WISH I WAS STILL 117 LBS. HAHAHAH Who amongst us old farts still looks the same? Well maybe Sophia Loren, I saw her picture in the paper this morning at Carlo Ponti's funeral, she is still beautiful. All of you brought back such wonderful memories, of good food and snow, and shopping, and Elrod I was born on Valentine avenue, many moons ago...
We used to go down the Hub on occasion, speaking of food stories. Hearn's had a complete food store that sold cakes, breads, cheeses, and other prepared foods. Anybody remember that? We used to stock up there before we would head up to the Mountains for the summer.
Also, the Hub had a few of those places that had steam tables, usually slabs of corned beef or pastrami that catered to men. Good food, no atmosphere. There was also a Chinese restaurant on top of the Liggett pharmacy at the corner of Melrose & Third Avenues, one flight up. We used to go there all the time.
Further up from the Hub on Cortlandt Avenue was Alex & Henry's, which was mainly a steak house that had catering facilities. That whole section around the west part of the Hub was mainly Italian, as I remember it.
Food, food FOOD!!! Yes, Mike, when you get to be an old fart like me these things become IMPORTANT!!! LOL!!!

Mike the Nedick in the hub was in the triangle where third ave met Melrose. I forgot about that. I always liked ****y hotdogs, so I didnt like the Nedick ones. I did like there orange drink, and there hotdog rolls. Billy I used to go to that chinees resurant, it was one of the firsts and lasted a long time. Alex and Henerys was the last of the big Cortland Ave Resturants to close, too bad.

Yes Fordham road was the greatest shopping mecca of it's time. I too lived off Fordham area from 1965-1968. I would walk past the RKO Paridise and some of the best Pizza ever served in the Bronx, Concourse Pizzaria, and then there where the pizza wars. You could get 2 slices and a coke for .50 cents. There was also a great dress shop called Plymoth's a notch above Alexander's.

My mother did shopping at the Fordahm Alexanders and other places there. The rest of us young folks did our shopping and galavanting on 170th Street and Washington Heights at 181st Street.

Herb you like that word galavanting I see. LOL. Anyway, Plymouth shop was my choice for handbags, and sweaters, etc. I still have things from there, because quality expensive items last forever. It was right on Valentine ave and Fordham road....thanks for the memories.
herb, I saw a photograph taken in the 1920's of the intersection of the Concourse and Fordham Road, the site which was to be occupied by Alexander's was home to the Wertheimer department store, which you must remember from 181st St. The block on the opposite corner, which is now the Wagner Building, was a group of apartment buildings called Wagner Court, with a sign on the edge of the building painted to read "High Class Apartments".
barbara, I remember that Plymouth shop with their bright green neon sign in art Deco lettering. It was there for years. I'm sure my mother and sister still have accessories from there too, because they had some quality items.
