Not sure about the LUXOR on 170th...I know the LIDO on Fordham Rd started showing X-rated films in the 70's. I'll Always Be A Bronx Kid. |

Mike, I went to most of the theaters in the Bronx. The theater on 170th st that I went to most often was the Zenith. Do you remember the Zenith?
|

Never went to the Zenith which was over by Jerome. The Luxor was on 170th just east of the Concourse (closer to home) I'll Always Be A Bronx Kid. |

As far as I remember the Luxor never became an X-theater

Fordham Road, now there's a blast from the past,
Fordham was the social scene back in the 60's, if you wanted to meet guys that was the place to go, near the recruiting stations, oh yeh, Gorman's for a frank with relish, mustard and a orange drink, sometimes we go to Woolworths to eat, not the greatest but hey we was young. How about the bakery up near the Dollar Savings Bank? Sutters? Geez, my mouth is watering for a Gorman's frank. |

I am having such wonderful memories reading all of this,I left the Bronx when I was only 11 yrs old so I don't have all the memories that you all do. We moved to Southern Calif. and I am still here. I do remember and no one has mentioned the Charlotte Russe on I think it was Fordham Ave. Across the street from Alexanders. I also remember Kurms and their great chocolate sodas. I am hoping to find some of my PS 8 friends from 203rd St. and the Concourse. I think the other street was Valentine Ave.
I am now a grandma and tell my grandkids about the old days. Elayne I lived on 203rd and the Concourse from1941 - 1949, went to PS 8 and 80. |

What happens to Fordham Road when the stores close is like a prison lock down. Gates come down bars come up. Owner hoping their store will be there in the morning in tact

I hate to say it but the down turn hit many places. I always wanted to live in LA. I went out and spent a summer there in 1962. I never got to move there, but I spent summers there when our kids were growing up. CA is not what it use to be LA has taken a big hit. We still go out there 3 times a year. Fl is nice in many ways but its growing way to fast. I have only been going there for a few years. I notice the change and I dont like it.
The old Bx is gone but its much better then 30 years ago. Every body from there is up where I live. You throw a stick you hit 3 people from the BX. |

Barry in the 70's you would see stores with there gates ripped off. Most stores were closed. Its not that bad any more. The hub is building. They are building a new comolex just north of 153rd st. To tell you the truth I dont go to Fordham that much. |

Someone mentioned on another board, about a fire at Krum's I think that happened in 1962
the whole place burned, they were closed for months, but they reopened, the place was completly different. The fire started in the back of the store where the counters were for eating. I remember Cousins records and the many shoe stores along the street, we used to hang by Alexanders and sometimes at Poe Park. |

Worked the Soda Fountain in 67. used to hang out on Marion Ave and Elm Place, just off the corner of Fordham Rd.

I really believe that the Bronx will come back. Maybe not within our lifetime but soon after. I look at what's happened to some of the worst neighborhood in Brooklyn, you can't touch them now. So when NYers who can't afford the city can't afford Brooklyn anymore they will start looking at the Bronx. You already see it in Riverdale and I think it's bound to spread.

Donna, remember the dances at Poe Park on Wednesday nights?
|

I used to go to the Poe Park dances, hoping to meet some nice girls. Sometimes I was lucky, but most of the time it was a washout. I recall that it was very crowded. I think the dances may still tasking place, or at least there is a bandstand and music at the park.
