. Big question among my Bronx friends. What are some other names for the big sandwich? Club, Hoagie? What did you call it as a kid? What do you call it NOW out in the "woods"?
I don't know what BRONX your from but don't you remember Murry the K and his Submarine races? There was even a sandwich shop called Submarine Sandwiches.

In Da Bronx it was always a Hero. On LI it was always a Hero. There were Hero shops. Murray the K wasn't refering to sandwiches when he talked about Submarine Races!
I was brought up in the South Bronx 152nd and St Annes Ave.Went to all the stores on 149th st.Alexanders Herns Freeds Cushmans German Pork Store.Later moved to burke ave. Had lots of friends on 187th st and Arthur ave in early sixties. went to all the feasts and loved all the Italian specialty stores.Used to go to soccer games I think the teams were Milano and FordhamItalians

There was this shop on Jerome Ave, I think it was a little past 167th street. They made the best ham and cheese hero! Yes, to us it was a hero! Out here in Oklahoma, they call it a sub. Someone from Chicago called it a grinder.
when I first moved to Florida 11 years ago I went into a deli and asked for a hero, and the guy replied "whats a hero"....he said its a hoagie, and I said whats a hoagie?
