Thought you would like to hear about my play, "The Bronx Balmers", which will be opening November 2 and running through November 19 in Manhattan. The setting is evocative of my own Bronx childhood though the storylines and characters are fictional. It's a well-written drama with very engaging and at time humorous characters that I'm sure many of you can relate to. Writing it was a labor of love.
Specifically, "The Bronx Balmers" addresses what happens when people forsake their [Bronx] community. Hope you can attend and thanks for taking the time to read this. Jeremy THE BRONX BALMERS November 2-19 The Turtle's Shell Theater 300 W. 43rd St., 4th Floor (Times Square Arts Center) New York, NY 8PM: Thu, Fri, Sat 2PM: Sat, Sun Tickets are available at TheaterMania.com Direct link is: http://www.theatermania.com/content/show.cfm/show/126717 Or you can call 212-352-3101. Additional information at www.bronxbalmers.com Here's the press release: Off The Leash Productions presents “The Bronx Balmers,” an emotional and compelling new drama by Bronx native Jeremy Handelman, at The Turtle’s Shell Theater starting November 2. One long-time director calls Handelman “…a new playwright of great force and promise”. Set in the Bronx during the tumultuous ‘60s, “The Bronx Balmers” explores what happens to the institutions of community and family when unstoppable outside forces impose radical change. The play offers an unvarnished examination of the subtle but complicated role that racism, sex, infidelity, generational conflict and the limits of friendship play in the lives of everyday people who are forced to confront these issues for the first time. The literal and emotional center of “The Bronx Balmers” is Rose Balmer, whose comfortable Jewish neighborhood is being turned upside-down by the profound social change of the times. In addition to coping with her beloved Yankees being eclipsed by the Mets, Rose must now confront a much bigger crisis: her rebellious teenage daughter is returning from New Mexico with a big surprise, and Rose's family is coming apart at the seams. How far will this strong-willed and caring matriarch go to hold her rapidly changing world -- and family -- together? “The Bronx Balmers” answers those questions with passion, honesty and considerable humor. Linda Burson, who has directed more than 250 productions and won numerous awards for her work, is directing the production. A talented design team led by Technical Director John W. Cooper, who is also founder and artistic director of Turtle Shell Productions, complements a stellar cast.
