--------As you read this, it happened already. I didn't know about it myself until I was cruising by the neighborhood and a homeboy gave me a heads up, so we went to check it out. The date was Saturday June 30th.
It was in the park adjoining the school of P.S.49. They had giant speakers set up, and long tables of food where they served you what you wanted. FREE. Chicken, rice, macaroni, pasta, turkey , beef, hot dogs, you name it.
They were playing all the old-school "jams" that you rocked to in house parties back-in-the-day, and that you don't hear anymore.
It was a great day, and a great crowd. Children were laughing and running around. All the old gang members had friends and relatives and got together to move their old bones to the music. It felt just like a block party.
Photos were taken, and stories were exchanged. Old gangs were mentioned, like the Savage Skulls, the Savage Nomads, and the Ching-A-Lings crew.
Why mention this? I don't know. I felt it was as much a part of the Bronx landscape of its past, and my past, as anything else. I will say that the old members didn't sport their gang decals or jackets, but wore suits, or summer shirts with collars.

Glad to hear you had a nice time. Sometimes you wonder how you survived your youth. Most do.
