I grew up on Popham Ave. and 175st 1960's --- and on Creston Ave / Tremont Ave. 1970's.
Anybody still around ? I lived on 175st off of University Ave, Creston Ave and Pelham Pkwy. I hung out on Villa Ave for a little while, I also worked in Mannions Bar on Jerome and Burnside ave for a few years. |

Hi,
I grew up on Popham Ave as well. (1480 to be exact on 174th street)... If you went down the hill you hit Eddie's Candy store on the corner. You could walk to the bakery and get a rye bread or you could eat pizza for 15 cents... I am Terri ( Allweil) and I went to PS 109 and JHS 82. Get back to me if this hits home. Thanks Hi All, I lived in the Bronx from 1954 until 1975 but I visited both my parents until they passed away until 2004. They lived in Coop City... Before that, we lived on Popham Ave. (right off University Ave.) SO anyone who remembers those areas can e-mail me and say hi! Thanks Terri ( Allweil) |

Hi, I could resist any more. I have been checking out this site for ages. After seeing 1480 Popham and 175th St. that was it, I had to sign in. It really was a great place to grow up, Maybe we didn't have it fancy but we had fun.
I grew up in 1472 Montgomery Ave.-- between Popham and University aves. One of my best friends and her sister, Carmen and Maryann, lived in 1480 Popham from 1956-64. I remember the apt being next the stairs on the left side of building, 3 or 5 fl? She and her family were from Spain, they were always outside the their grandmother. Ring any bells. I also went to PS109, 82, and Taft. The first 3 years of High School I hung around outside the area -- in my senior year I encountered the future hubby (Alex lived in the Sedgwick Projects, 156 W 174th St.) I worked behind the counter in Eddie's in 1969-1970--5 nights a week for about 6-7 months. We left the neighborhood in 1970 when we got married--went to Yonkers for 10 years--then to New Rochelle. Alex passed away in 1997. My new love does not understand anything at all when I try to explain what it was like growing up in the Bronx--Oh well, what do you want from a person who grew up in PA and NJ. I see the old neighborhood all the time--I have worked at a publishing co. located at 162nd off Odgen Ave for the past 38 years, their official address is 950 University Ave. Remember the Deli next to the Pizza place --one of the Greek guys, Gus, also worked at the company too. So did many other people from the neighborhood-- that is how I ended up there--my friends mom worked there and got me in working part time after school. I was trying to remember some of the people from Popham--I came up with Brenda (1st floor windows facing the triangle in 174th), Steve Castellano (Popham ave in building facing 175th) --there were some other girls I knew but they all moved in the early-mid 1960s. I remember Mannions--people I knew would go there--I went a few times--not my thing. |

I lived at 57 West 175 Street in the 50's and sixty's. Went to P.S.104 3rd thru 6th and P.S.82 7th thru 9th. Always went to Eli's and Myers candy store, square pizza on university ave and the Park Plaza movie theater. Sometimes hung out on the benches on universty. Does anyone remember the doo *** and sho b doo singing done at the benches or how about Orchard Beach by bus and back home?

I went to PS 82. The ice cream parlor on University was named Luhrs and Rushmeyers . I think it was Rushmeyers first.

Square Pizza --was not my thing. My brother (7 years older and PS104 & PS109, 82, Taft alumni) used to down Featherbed Ln/Macombs Rd for pizza. I found Crown Pizza on Tremont & University (.10 a slice). When the price went up to .15 I switched to Steve's, between 175th & 176th, it was closer and also .15. Didn't go to the pizza shop near 174th until Steve sold his place.
I loved Luhrs--yes it was Rushmeyers. My parents moved into the neighborhood in 1943. Heard the stories about the bus service from the train station, the projects used to be a Convent and some buildings on Undercliff Ave had doormen & phones in the lobby. My father would take me to Luhrs every couple of weeks for sundaes on daughter/daddy day. On Valentine's Day/Mother's Day/Easter my mother and I would get a box of Luhrs assorted chocolates. What a great place it was! What great memories I have connected to Luhrs!! My parents didn't leave Montgomery Ave until 1972--they followed the rest of the Bronx to Co-Op City (Section 5). They became totally involved in the Co-Op community. They weren't Skippy's & Laura's mom & dad anymore--they were Ed & Marge. I am very nostalgic when it comes to the Bronx. My aunts and uncles + cousins lived from one end to the other --Washington, Tiebout, Bathgate, Harrison, Walton, Brook, Melrose, Watson, St Ann, Decatur, Jerome Aves. I remember walking from one relative to the other to visit. Shopping on Fordham Rd, Bathgate Ave and 3rd Ave, Burnside Ave. and always having a place to make a pit stop. None of the family is left in the Bronx--except 3 of my mother's cousins (in their 80's & 90's)--my mom still has her apt. in Co-Op City but not for much longer--she is 89 and has been staying with me. There were so many kids in the neighborhood--all sizes, shapes, colors, nationalities, religions, and attitudes. Perfect for learning how to live with the rest of the world as an adult. Peace...... |

Thanks for the welcome--I glad I finally joined the rest of the Bronx lovers.
My brother switched from PS104 to PS109 when 109 opened, early-mid 1950s--54-55?;I think he was only there for 6th grade--I started K in 109 in 1956. 1/2 of Sedgwick Projects went to 109; 1/2 went to 104; University Ave was the dividing line for the rest. Going down Featherbed Ln.--after University was Plimpton--a paint store on the corner and Post Office in the block, on the left was the side entrance of a church, beauty parlor, a candy store??. Next was Nelson, can't remember anything on the right side except buildings. On the left there was a Y intersection, a store and bank on Featherbed; Nelson went off to the left and on the right corner was a candy store; a drugstore next door was on the left corner of Featherbed--after the drugstore there was a butcher, women's clothes store, Daitch-Shopwell, card/hobby shop (with a horse outside), hardware store, the others will come to me in my sleep. Down toward Macombs there was another "supermarket", Johns Bargain Store, the Pizza/Restaurant my brother went to. On the right between Nelson and Shakespeare there was a kids clothes store, barbershop, shoemaker, bakery, candy store, I don't remember a pizza place. maybe a Chinese Restaurant??. On Shakespeare was St Francis of Assisi Church (that is where I was married in 1970) On the corner of Shakespeare/Featherbed there was a cleaners, vegetable stand, button store, and a bar--they all closed when St Francis didn't renew the leases(church owned that whole corner.) They had ideas of building a school--never happened--they started the building fund but it flopped--people in the parrish were starting to move away or they figured the school would not be finished soon enough for their kids to use. So the loyal few (my Mom included) let the church keep the money already in and added a little more to build a community center. I think the center is still there. On the left side of Featherbed down at Cromwell there was a drug store and a beauty parlor. I was just through there about 6 weeks ago. |

Laurie, Do you remember International Supermarket? It was right on Featherbed. And by the way I'm a Laurie T too. What's your last name?

Hi Laurie,
The name International Supermarket isn't ringing any bells. Where exacly was it? Somewhere in the back of my mind I can almost see a store in the middle of the block past the Hobby shop. For some reason I keep thinking pickles in barrels. Daitch and the fruit/vegetable stand are the two I am sure of. I was a Scharfenberg for 19 years--have been a Tomorelli for the past 37 years--new name is pending. My husband, Alex, passed away in 1997 at 48 (pancreatic cancer). New love is actually a guy I met 43 years ago down the NJ shore. I have been driving him crazy most of the day--I took a trip down Memory Lane. He has been very polite and is smiling alot. Peace....... |

Laurie T... what HS did you attend? I'm gonna guess and say you are Class of 69?.. Is St Francis still an active parish?

Hi Mike,
As far as I know St Francis is still active--they are connected to Sacred Heart Parish on the other side of Shakespeare in Highbridge. The last I heard there is a community program running out of it. Taft: Class of 1969 -- I didn't particularly like school at the time and did a minimal amount of work (when I even bothered to show up). Somehow, I managed to pass all the Regents and get an Academic diploma. (Divine intervention I guess) Peace..... |

Yes, I thought so...the Sacred Heart Pastor is also the Administrator for St Francis....I had a classmate from OLV ...Brian Shea who was in the Taft Class of 69.

Hi Mike,
Don't remember a Brian Shea. Might remember his face if I ever dig out my book. Most of the kids I hung around with were 1-2 older & 1-2 grades ahead --the younger ones decided to go to Evander on Gun Hill (Truman wasn't built yet)--they were moving to Co-Op City and didn't want to change schools after moving. Where in Fordham did you live? My cousins lived on Tiebout--moved to Staten Island in 1965. Peace...... |

I lived on 194 and Decatur...65-74.

Just an after thought--she lived 3-5 blocks off Fordham RD, I think it was 1 or 2 blocks past Union Hosp. on 188th?; we would walk on 188th or 184th to go Washington Ave. Remember something about stairs along the way. |

|

Yes, there was stairs coming down to 188th that you would have used to go to that area.
