Splendid...2 Bronx buddies..I'm going to have to be specific....Laurie T. and Laurie S. I'm really glad you two are aboard this forum. Keep up the great posts!
Hi Mike, My cousin and his wife lived on Decatur & East Gun Hill Rd. for years. The building was on the right on Decatur coming up from Webster--it always reminded me of something from medieval times. They retired in the mid-70's and took off to Atlantic Highlands, NJ

Peace........
I know the building you are referring to...just up one block from the screeching curve of the 3rd Ave EL on Webster Ave.
Hi Laurie, I am sure my mom must have some pictures of Featherbed Lane. My father was always taking pictures down near St Francis. Maybe I can find something in the background on one of them. I have 2 sons-- (took 9 years for the 1st to arrive in 1980 #2 came 22 months later) #1-- 27 in May--living in Tampa, FL--still looking for Miss Perfect--working as manager/supervisor at a Best Buy--doesn't ever want to live in NY again. #2-- 25 --still home--finishing up his Masters degree at Iona College--decided he wants to be a teacher (go figure)-- he is also the father of my precious 5 yr old grandson.
It was really spooky in the hall. The apt was OK--they has so much stuff hanging around. He like to fish and they had a boat --it looked like part of the marina was in the living room.
I always wonder how the people lived in those apts on Webster. I remember standing under the tracks and looking up--they looked like they were only 3 ft away from the windows. ...and the noise!!!!! I bet the rent was real cheap.

I've often wondered the same thing. The folks that I have talked to who actually lived in those apts claim that they got used to the noise and never gave it a second thought. I lived 1 block up from the El and could only hear it in the summer when all the windows were open 24/7.

Hi all, Thanks Herb--I couldn't remember the kind of church it was. For years I looked in the window and saw a huge piano--I got inside in the late 60's when my mom was a Girl Scout district leader helping to organize a new troop. The piano wasn't that huge after all. Laurie--I may eventually figure out where the International Supermarket was. Does anyone remember any of the other stores?
There was hardware store next to? a little past? Daitch. Bought my mother's first shopping cart there in 1961--she had it until 1976. I think I paid $5-$6. Herb--Was that pizza place 1 or 2 doors up from the bakery? Was there also a butcher and "another" beauty parlor?
I grew up at 1770 Montgomery Avenue, went to 109 the first year it opened (started in the 6th grade - transferred from 24), went to 82 and then Taft. Anyone from there?
Hi Ruth, I lived in 1472 Montgomery Ave. PS109, 82, Taft alumni also, although about 6-7 years behind you. You probably ran into my brother. He was there the same time as you. He transfered into 6th grade from PS104 when PS109 opened. He also went to 82 & Taft.
Question for Kenneth: Know anyone from on Davidson Ave? A friends parents were supers of one of the building, can't remember what #. Last name is Hearty.
Hi Ruth, My brother would usually hangout between 174th and 175th on Montgomery until his mid-teens. Then he would disappear leaving the block, I'm not sure were he went. At one time he did have a girl friend that lived on University Ave. going towards Burnside Ave. near Holy Spirit Church. Back then most people knew him as "Skippy" now he is Eddie Scharfenberg. Just thought of something--He had Mrs. Lockerwitz (I know that is spelled wrong) in PS109-- My brother thought she was weird. I had her in 5th grade and thought she was probably one the greatest teachers I ever knew. Remember a teacher named Mrs. Sadie Katlin she had 6th grade when I was there my brother remembered her too. I will ask him what teachers he remembers from 82 & Taft and also check the dates he was at each school.
Hi Laurie, I can't seem to remember my teacher from PS109, since I only went there for one year, the first year it opened. I do remember my second grade teacher from PS26, a Mrs. Gordon. I do remember some teachers from PS82. Mr. Fontana and Miss Hair, who was the stereotype spinster teacher. She could have stepped out of an Archie comic book. I think she was an 8th grade social studies teacher, but I'm not sure. Anyone remember them and other teachers from 82??
Hi Ruth, I remember Mr. Fontana. He was Spanish teacher, right? I took French, Mrs Borenstein. Maybe you know these names Mrs. Morris, music (I had her son his first year of teaching there), Mr. Finkelstein, Mr Casper (I think boys gym). The year I started 82 there were many new teachers. Taft -- I think these teachers were there during you time--Mr Colbert (he was the dean of boys during my time), Mr Redmond (Economics) again, a teacher my brother thought was weird and I thought was a great(Mr Redmond sure had his own style of teaching but I remember almost everything I learned in his class), Mr Salesky(geography), Mr Kckenna (English), Mrs Comerford (history), Mr Sadwick (music, I worked in the band room one term--mimeograph machine was there and I did the mimeographing for teachers. Mrs Gould (girls gym), Mr Dorfman (Biology), Mr Russak (General science). Most of the other teacher I had were new to Taft.
Laura T. Tommy DiCarlucci from Davidson Ira Rogovan Davidson The steepest hill from Grand Ave to Davidson leading to the 1000 steps to the 174 175 street train #4 Woodlawn. Both Tommy and Ira went to P. S. 82. By the way Mr. Fontana's daughter also taught at 82. Did you know on the corner of Nelson and Featherbed was the Deli that had a sign "We sell Lox" and next door was a hardware store that had a sign "We see Locks" Larry ???? red hair from Davidson went on to teach at Taft while going for his law degree in the evening. Have to go just heard the whisle to stop moving and second whisle to get on line.
