Mr Fontana was the favorite teacher of most who went to PS 82. He taught there for a long time. When I was at 82, Fontana was a young man and was the heartthrob of many of the girls.

Hi,
Kenneth: I must have walked up Nelson a million times--somewhere I get a fleeting image of stores next to the bank. The candy store had windows on Nelson--there was a telephone booth in 1 of the windows? Don't remember the names you mentioned but I am still thinking. Herb: Ms Woodnail, Mr. Woodnail (husband and wife) I didn't have either of them but I remember their names. Mr. Schwartzer, if he was a SS teacher I had him. The rest of the names don't sound familiar Louis: graduated Taft in '69, my brother graduated '62 (I think)---174th and Montgomery Ave.-- Mr Colbert taught at Roosevelt Evening HS in the later part of the 60's. My father was at Roosevelt to get his HS diploma. He was the oldest son of 7 kids and like so many of his generation he quit school to help support the rest of the family. Mr Colbert was his SS teacher, they would get deep into debates. Politics was my father's thing, he could go on for hours...... It was a trip to have my father in HS the same time as I was--nothing I did got past him. After HS my father spent years in night classes at Bx Community College going for a Electrical Engineering degree (to make more money doing exactly what he was already doing but with a desk and name plate). Peace.......... |

Hi everyone! Laurie, I lived in 1495 Popham and I remember Carmen and her sister! My mom was very friendly with their grandma! Wasn't their last name Pascual?? I don't remember now. I lived on Popham from 1950 to 1970, went to 109, 82 and a few high schools. The kids in my building were Marty, Sharon, Phyllis, Michael, Darren, Franklin, Andy, Joyce, Barbara, Roz, Gayle, Barbara, Randy, Sandy, Alan, Amy, Sheldon, Michael G,...gee, there were ALOT of kids in that building...and I'm leaving out some names! I used to go to the afternoon center at 109, buy food at the "boys", get pretzels at Eddies. There was a price war between the two pizza places on University and the slices actually dipped to 10 cents at one point. 50 cents bought me 2 slices and a coke. The teachers I remember from there were Havanek, O'Brian ... Hagarty, Bongard, Johnson, Kenny, Klareich. Ms. Murray and Mr. Harris were Principal and V.P.. Namowitz was principal at 82 then. I only kept in touch with one person. She was from the Jesup/Shakespeare Ave. area.
I lived on Popham Avenue near the projects from 1950 to 1970. Went to 109, 82, ... |

Hi Melanie,
A few names you mentioned sounded familiar but I can't put faces on them. I do remember a red haired girl that was friendly with Carmen. I am sure we must have met back then--I met Carmen and Maryann Pascual at St Francis in religion class, we made our First Communion together. I stayed in touch with Carmen and her family for years. In 1969 they were living in Queens after returning to the US from Spain. Carmen was married and expecting her first son. In 1970 she was a bridesmaid in my wedding. In 1972 my late husband and I are the godparents for her 2nd son. Maryann married Carmen's husband's brother. 1975 or 6 they all decided to go back to Spain. We kept in touch until the early 80's. The last time I heard from her she said there were things going on, her mother was sick and that she would explain later. I never heard from her again. I tried to write to her and her sister but my letters came back as undeliverable. Maybe one day I will find out what appened. I occasionally went to the afternoon center at 109. I remember the dance lessons with Mr Casper & Mr Finkelstein --It was strange seeing them as real teachers in 82. Some teachers remember from 109-- K--Miss O'brien , Miss Tourup ???, Ms Bartow, Miss Morrie?? (subed entire year for my 3rd grade class), Miss Walsh, Mrs. Lockerwitz, Mrs Katlin---Miss Murray --Principal and Mr. Harris--Assist. Prin.--I remember the names Miss Kenney, Ms Feld, Ms Gold (Subteach). Was Ms. Haggerty the other older K teacher?? Ms Pearl O. Shutman? was the principal of 82 when I was there 63-65. Do you remember Mr Boxer (music), Mr Kelly, Mr Downey. Have you been back to Popham? I was through there about 3 years ago--Funny how small PS 109 really is and the long trek I remember walking turned out to be only a few short blocks. The private houses going towards the school were still there, Buildings on 175st is gone. There are 2&3 family homes there now. Actually, some sections of the area look better than when we lived there. There are parts that if you were just put there and opened up you eyes you would say this look really nice. It is a block by block thing--but all the changes I have seen lately are for the better. Peace......... |

Hi Laurie,
I was in transit from Fla back to NY so couldn't replay sooner........ The K teachers were Havanek and O'Brien. I believe O'Brien got married when I was in K and became Ms. Haggarty. I did go back to Popham and I shouldn't have. The first time I went back my building and several others were just burned out lots with a dead dog in the middle. It was soooo depressing. The second time I went back I saw new garden style homes which was much nicer. I did want to see the old building though. I never felt I had enough pics! No pics of the apartment either and it was huge! I left when Namowitz was principal. I got very sick in JHS and had to be home schooled so he may have retired while I was supposed to be there. This site really brought back memories. Somewhere...I still have the 109 and 82 yearbook. Melanie I lived on Popham Avenue near the projects from 1950 to 1970. Went to 109, 82, ... |

Hi Melanie,
Yep, you are right--O'Brien became Haggerty. I think when she moved to 1st grade her classroom was across the hall from the K class--next to the first entrance on Popham. My old building on Montgomery Ave is still there-gutted and renovated. We had such big closets-- 4 of us lived in a 1 bedroom apt with 2 walk in closets. It does get depressing to see buildings gone or in shambles. From what I am seeing, the Bronx is taking a turn for the better. I think Ms Shutman might have been retiring the year I was leaving or she just came when I started 82--I do remember something about someone retiring. I remember her black (dyed) hair pulled back in a bun. I also like to read all the Bronx memories.... The Bronx was a great place to grow up. Most of us didn't have or get much but we still had it all. Peace............ |

Does anyone remember Mark Serril? (Not sure of the spelling). He lived in 1495. Had a sister Beth. I believe he became a rabbi. Would like to contact him.

Hi all! I liked reading the post about Undercliff Ave apts; they did have doormen and phones to announce guests and elevator operators in the 1940s and 1950s. I lived at 1535 Undercliff from 1952-1966. My paternal grandfather built 1535 and 1571 Undercliff. My mom told me about the busses to the train station and that the projects were on the land of a former convent. I attended PS 109 from K-6 (1958-1964) and had Miss Havernack and Miss OBrien (OBrien later married) Miss Torop, Miss Edna Kelley, Miss Martin, Mrs. Borodovko, Miss Johnson, and Mrs Sybil Brown. You can visit the old neighborhood virtually now via Google Earth street view and "drive down the streets"

Hi Patricia,
I lived at 160 w. 174 street, Ms. Havernack was my KIndergatten teacher. I also Had Miss Edna F. Kelly for second grade. She was a wonderful lady. I used to be in contact for many years through the mail. WE exchanged christmas cards for many years. I remember her always using a fountain pen with turquoise ink. She had a tremendous impact on my life. I remember looking forword to her cards and notes. After about 25 years of exchanging cards , they ceased coming. I was sad to see that she probably had passed on. Great memories of youth though. |

Larry, I was born @ 1793 Montgomery, moved to 1500 Popham in 1946. Do you remember Henry the shoemaker just north of our building and Mr Greenhouse the tailor down the hill on Tremont Ave? There is nothing as jealous as the truth - Carl Jung |

This post is close to three years after Laurie T's and I was Fordham Prep Class of '57, so I am likely twelve years older than she was. Nonetheless, I wanted to compliment her on her detailed post, much of which I remembered since I was a member of St Francis of Assisi parish. I was an altar boy from the time I was nine ['49], the parish had Monsignor Breen as its pastor with Fr. Leddy and the "feared" Fr. Griffin, who often displayed his irish temper when noting parishoners coming in late to Mass.
The candy store on the right side of Nelson avenue and Featherbed lane as you headed towards Shakespeare was called Kleiman's. The church at the bottom of Featherbed lane on the left side was presbyterian and I remember you could go through those side doors and bowl. Don't remember if they had just two lanes, but I remember being a pin boy, getting five cents a line. Right next to that church was a candy store, but many of my blockmates from 174th and Universiy avenue preferred both Kleiman's and Eddie's [corner of University and Popham, across from the projects which in the '40s was a convent]. As a little boy, I often played in the "triangular" park situated between University avenue and Featherbed lane. My friends and I would play basketball in the early '50s at the outdoor courts in the projects. Sometimes I'd walk down to Undercliff avenue and look up at the underside of the smaller Washington bridge ["Martha", I guess]. Often, we'd walk across into Washington Heights and have our choice of movie theatres: the Empress, then on the next block the Gem and the Lane [next to them was St James restaurant] and further up on St Nicholas avenue was the RKO. What wonderful times they were.....I went to Holy Spirit school from '46 thru '53 and the gang on University avenue went to PS 104 and PS 82. Some of the names from back then were: Armand Lovi, Bobby Boylan, James Hardy, Doug McGee, Bobby Ferrens, Johnny Capucatti, Michael Marshall, Bobby Woods, Vinny DeFrancesco, Elaine and Jimmy Irvine, Bobby Price, Johnny Muller, George and Michael Cahill, Jimmy Reilly, Barbara and Patricia Tonrey and of course a whole slew of others. I left the Bronx in 1972 and currently reside in New Jersey, but the Bronx will always have a very special place in my heart. |
