Hi Ed, I'm from OLM, lived on 194th and hung out on Marion Ave and Elm Place (60's)

I walked past that street quite a few times, but I can't remember much about it. As Mike knows, I do remember the steps at the end of Elm Pl. just off from Fordham.
Ed, I just wanted to let you know that I read your post, and welcome. |

It was the very small Chinese Restaurant on the left side of Elm Place as you walked in from Fordham Road. BTW, enjoy your "blonde moments" My "senior moments" are really starting to scare me! Proudly Served, 1970-90 |

Hi Janet and Ed. Janet I lived at 2463 Marion. We lived on the 1st floor, I remember your
family well. Didn't you move to Long Island, I remember going out to visit your family there. I think your sister hungout with Patsy Hoban, I'm still in touch with her. Please give your family my regards. In 1960 I was in 8th grade in OLM. Ed I don't remember you I hungout with a large crowd on the Doc's Stoop NE corner of Marion and 188th St. Mike I remember Monsigor O'Leary he would give us our report cards. He reminded me of Barry Fitzgerald. He was an institution at OLM. Great place, great time. Mike who were some of the people you knew on Elm Place? |

oh my gosh...gibby. i was pretty young when we moved to long island, about 10 or 11 and my memory is awful! i remember the chambers, i was friends with the twins. i actually heard from teresa chambers recently!
i'm sorry to tell you my sister died in 1974. she ended her life. it was a pretty awful and sad state that she was in. my mom died in 1982. my dad died in 1996 so i have no one to reminisce about the past and it's great to see a message like this from someone who remembers my family!!! do you have pics from 2463? i have a few. |

schwartz,

Janet I am so sorry to hear about your sister. My dad died in 1999. My mom is still alive
and lives in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx. My Name is Tom Gibson, my twin brothers were born in 1954 Jimmy and Rob, my brother John was born after you moved. I called my mother today and told her I had seen your post. It brought back great memories for her of the parties in your apartment and ours. Sometimes the doors were just left open(we lived across the hall on the first floor) and the party was in both places. I remember you as a sweet little girl. Your dad was funny always the life of the party and if he got too carried away your mom would reign him in. He worked for Lilly didn't he? Your family was very happy back then, I hope that gives you some comfort. My mom told me that your mom visited her on 193rd st. years later. We moved from Marion in 1965. It was a great block I don't know if you remember that it was a "play street" always plenty of kids to play with. The church and school were also on our street. It was pretty much the hub of OLM Parish. I will see if I can dig up some old photos. I will email them to you along with my mom's telephone number. I'm sure she has some great stories for you. Love and Peace Gibby. |

Gibby, the group of us that used to hang out across the street from the Dynasty on the upper end of Elm Place pretty much all came from the other side of Fordham Road...193rd /194th...Bainbridge and Marion. I never missed a Friday night dance at OLM. I was also an altar server and usher there in 66-69. My two sisters and brother all graduated from OLM.

hi gibby,
wow! it's coming back to me! the gibson's and the gibson twins! you know i think your mom and dad came to long island to visit us after we moved. i think i have a picture of your parents in front of our house on long island. i'll try and find it. i can scan it and send it to you. my father was pretty funny. he used to put speakers on the fire escape and play loud music way before it became normal. he was from iran, not too many iranians in the bronx back then or maybe even now (he was probably the only one then) and that was always a bit confusing for me, people always asking me if i was from puerto rico. my dad did work for lily but then worked for social services. it was a great place, i would love to go back in time and see it all again! remember the super? i think her last name was gardella? the jacobi's were across the dumb-waiter from us on the 3rd floor. their son michael seemed to be heading for trouble. i remember occasionally a man would sing in the court yard and my sister and i would throw down a nickle or whatever for him (when we lived on the 3rd floor) it's so great to get this blast from the past! i live in north carolina now...a lot different environment than my bronx roots. i have 3 children, one still in college and today was a special day for me...had my graduation ceremony for a masters degree from UNC Chapel Hill for nurse practitioner. i would love to chat on the phone with your mom. sounds like she is as sharp as a tack with her memory! janet |

Hi all:
I'm delighted that my initial post resulted in a few people "getting together" on line! I went through OLM, K to 8 graduating in 1954. Then went to Mt. St. Michael HS and then to Iona College. I remember the stickball games on Marion and the shrine that went from Marion down to Webster Ave. I worked in the A&P on Valentine Ave. after school and also Sears Roebuck on Webster. A few years ago I took a nostalgia trip through the old neighborhood, starting at the Kingsbridge Armory where I was a Reservist (it's gone) to the A&P (it's gone) and to Sears (it's gone).....It was sad to see the past so changed as a flood of memories came to me on every block. I'm retired now and have the time to take another nostalgia trip - soon. God bless everyone from the old neighborhood. We weren't rich by any means, but we are now rich in memories and a good foundation provided by THE BRONX! Merry Christmas! Ed "Red" Quinn |

Hi Ed, thank you for your post. Seems I was six years behind you at OLM and at an age when
people gave their age in half years (I'm 7 and 1/2), six years was big. I laugh now at how we wanted to get older, little did we know. Our paths were similar graduated OLM in 1960 went to Hayes then to Manhattan. I worked at Sears 1964-1966. Forgot about the A&P on Valentine right by the conveant. It was truly a great place to growup. I'd like to wish you and your family a very Merry Chistmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. From one Marion Ave. guy to another. |
