Hey all,

I grew up on Evergreen, between Westchester and Watson (1160), and probably hung out more on the Westchester side than the Watson side, although I walked down Watson to get to 123, and to Boynton to get to 93. Vic Abramowitz, you sound familiar. I went to 93 from 51-56, 123 from 56-60 and Monroe from 60-64 and was in the band and orchestra, playing trumpet and mellophone. I knew alot of guys from that area, particularly if they were in the band or orchestra. My grandmother lived on Boynton, between Watson and Westchester, near the bank (Manufacturere Hanover Trust, across from the Ward Theather). I used to go to that candy store on Elder and Watson, what was it's name? And I took trumpet lessons from my PS 93 music teacher, Mr. Al Kahn, who lived on the corner of Boynton and Watson. He had a son Eddie. I actually was able to contact Mr. Kahn a few years back, and it so amazing to talk with him; I actually recognized his voice.

I'd like to hear more about Watson between Evergreen and Morrison, lets speak!!

Hi Steve Heller,

I remember you as we both went to the same schools in the Bronx (PS 93, PS 123 and James Monroe). I grew up on Boynton Avenue between Watson Avenue and Bruckner Blvd.

The name of the candy store was something like Adelsons and he sold the best Cherry Coke and Chocolate Vanilla sodas.

My cousin Ruth who lived on Elder Avenue off Watson Avenue, but moved out to California in 1949 had visited the neighborhood last summer. The following was written by her:

"I left there in 1949.I went to New York last summer with My daughter Joann and grandson Jordan. I rented a car and driver to take us to the Bronx to see the old neighborhood. It was a great thing to do. The houses (we lived in a 2 family house) were in great shape and looked nicer than when I had left. They all had brick facades and white gates around the "stoops". We drove around so I could show the family my old school (P.S. 77). Westchester Ave itself was full of grafitti and was a very mixed neighborhood. The old candy store on the corner that I used to go to for comic books, egg creams, bubble gum and Simchat Torah flags is now a grocery store of mixed ethnic foods. The neighborhood is not at all Jewish now but it was really nostalgic to see it again and I was pleasantly surprised at how many of the landmarks and streets I remembered. "

I lived at the corner of Watson and Evergreen from 1949-51. I lived at Boynton and Bruckner Blvd. before that. The guys on Evergreen sometimes used to throw rocks at me when I had to go to Westchester to do errands for my mom - hope you weren't one of them! (I threw a few back, but I was a girl!). I went to P.S. 93 for grades 1-3. Anyone remember Mrs. Weinstein in Grade 3? I can't remember the names of the other two teachers. Thanks for the reminders of the Ward Theater and the candy store at Elder and Watson, Steve. I saw Wizard of Oz at the Ward when I was five - didn't sleep for weeks. I don't remember the name of the candy store, but your post brought back the taste of Louis Sherry ice cream, which they were the only place in the neighborhood to sell. We moved upstate before I could decide whether I liked the chocolate or the black cherry better.

Bronxgirl, did you live on Evergreen, in one of those "garden apartments" between Watson and Bruckner? Between Watson and Westchester it was only 6-story apartment buildings. I lived in the middle of the block, in one of those light tan buildings next to the parking lot. Do you remember the garden apartments they put in-between Evergreen and Wheeler on Watson? I had a few friends who lived there. I also played ball in the lot on the corner of Evergreen and Watson.

What memories! I see it all as if it was yesterday!

I remember when they built those garden apartments. We lived in the pair of buildings on the other side of Watson - they were 6 story, red brick, and had a little courtyard between them. When we moved there from Boynton we really felt like we'd moved to the country, because of that courtyard. It's really wonderful discovering this site and recovering part of one's past.

If it was the building I remember, I had friends including Marty Zwiebach, Marty Wohl, Larry Falk and Howie Leibowitz who lived there.

May I ask what years you went to 93, 123 and Monroe?

I found out the candy store on Elder and Watson was called Adelsons or Edelsons.
