Prospect Ave. & E. 187th St. for the first 8 years then E. 182nd St. until I was 20. Then we moved to E. 236th Street and Richardson Ave. I only lived there for 3 years then I got married.

Well 187th and Prospect is in Belmont, at the most earstern most part. Right near Bronx Park.

And 182nd is in East Tremont. So I doubt you lived there after about 1975.

So I take it you must have grown up in the 40s or 50s?

I was born in 1947....Prospect Ave. in 1957, I moved to E. 182nd Street, right across the street for the Crotona entrance of the Bronx Zoo.

I remember never having to worry about crime, the only worry we had was the Boulevard traffic. The buses, my mother always feared we would get hit by a bus. When I was living on Prospect, although I was quite young, I would go to the store for my mom, all the way around the corner to the bread store, the grocery store, the shoe maker, the candy store. Of course, Colavolpe's. Our parents never gave it a thought about someone taking us (or our money). It was a very different time.

I was born in 1947 on 159th st. betw. Courtland and Park Ave. I went to P.S. 3 for two years then we moved to Carrol Place one block east of the Grand Concourse at 166th street, At the time, around 1954, St. Ursuline Academy occupied the S.E. corner of 166th st. Later, the academy was torn down and Executive towers was built. In 1963 or 1964 we moved around the corner to Sheridan Ave.

Carol B, I don't think your building exist anymore. I think it got vaporized by fires, that whole area got wiped out. 155th to 165th has more empty lots then any other ghetto area I have seen in this country. Especially around 161. The area is devistated. Looks 1980ish.

Carol B,

The corner you are talking about (St U Acamadmy, then Exec Towers) was SE corner of 165th and Grand Concourse. You climb up the "street steps" at 165th to get to the start of Caroll Pl.

As you may know from my many posting I am moving to Executive Towers soon... the area looks great and the apartment is fantastic.

The Bronx Museum of Art (formerly Young Israel) on NE corner is expanding (more than 2x the size) and building a residential tower.

I looked at an apartemnt at 1100 Grand Concourse (NE corner of 166 ST) and it was a first floor apartment that faced the rear, which was corner of 166th and Carroll Pl. The corner looked "tired" but OK.

Hi Michael and Carol
Carol, Michael is right Executive Tower is on the site where ST. Ursuline Academy and Convent once stood.
Michael Carol Place starts at 164th. If the buildings are still standing 1011 Carol Place and 1011 Sheridan ave are next to each other.
Carol did you get my message about Monty?

Barry...

I glad I'm right... I got the info from you a while ago! Big Grin hehehe Thanks again! Smiler

And you are right about Caroll Pl... I does start at 164th... I always forget about that little piece of 164th that curves behind Executive Towers... but I always notice the "street steps" across 165th St.

Was the Ursuline Academy a school for girls and a convent? Or a complex of buildings?

Also, what was the church on the triangle plot behind Executive Towers? I heard that there was a church there that was recently "torn down". Now it's just an empty (but clean) lot.

Michael

Hi Michael
As I recall ST Ursuline was a residence for Nuns.
They were teachers at ST.Angela Merici School at 163rd St and Morris ave. Many of my friends went there. I believe the church on the south side of 165th St. between Sheridan ave and Carol Pl. was an Episcopal Church.

I and my twin brother, Jody, were born in Westchester Square Hospital on August 8, 1958. 17 months later Billy was born there. We lived at 2589 Harding Avenue in Throgs Neck until we were 19 months old and moved to West Islip and got another brother and 4 sisters.

I have friends and relatives in the Bronx and still feel a belonging to it.
